Best 2D shooter
There's some hot debates goin' on about the quality of Border Down on another topic here, and that leads me to this topic. What's your favourite 2D shoot-em-up, old skool style on the DC? How does say, Bangai-o compare with Border Down and the others? You can say whatever you like, just don't gore anyone up the ass

Assuming emulation counts: I still, to this very day, Play Super R-Type. I don't know why I love that game so much.
Don't think of them as Orcs. Think of them as XP with legs and axes.

If emulation did count I'd have to say R-Type, for regular stuff though its between Gigawing, Mars Matrix & Ikaruga
theres no-one else to blameThe Prisoner - Makes NGE's ending look almost intelligible.
Bored? figure out where the above lines from. Answers

i agree with segato, M.U.S.H.A. for the Genesis is one of the best shooters ever!!!! very fast paced, great music , graphics(for that time period), and bosses. another is Herzog Zwei. its actually the first RTS game, but had some shooter elements.
also, Life Force for NES and Gradius III for SNES.
for DC, i'd give it to Ikaruga followed by Borderdown.

I completed bangai-o, what a game. but, it's not R-type.
There are countless 2d's - salamander, terra cresta, thunderforce (oh yes what a game - I, II, III & IV...), zero wing (all your base belong to us), slap fight, canyon warrior (complete with level editor - on a speccy 128!!!)
I have Ikaruga - it's good, but it isn't great. Everyone thinks it's great - but Xenon2 (Amiga 500) - that was great. Really great. Bomb the bass, powerups galore, great levels.... Bitmap brothers ROCK.
My answer - they are all rockin'
