DivX 3 or DivX 4?

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

DivX 3 or DivX 4?

Post by Shakey_Jake33 »

I know the DC DivX player plays both DivX 4 and DivX 3.11. But I read the DivX 3.11 playback wasn't as good as the DivX4 playback. So is it worth converting my DivX3.11 movies into DivX4?

The movies are 320x240, 15fps, 44100hz, Stereo, 16-bit, using DivX audio compressor.

Thanks.

4.12

The players code is based on the DivX 4.12 codec. Use 4.12 whenver possible. If you are going to do encoding anyways, why not use 4.12? If your 3.11 movies you have already play on the DC (some of mine do) then dont bother re-encoding them. (I didn't)

I haven't burnt them yet, or tried them on the DC. I wanted to check which would run best, I'm very stingy with discs :)

with only 15fps, your playback probably wont be affected all that much anyways, but youre audio may desync (if it works at all) as i have no clude what "divx" audio is, and even if it were .mp3 audio thats about the max that dcdivx can play handle anyways...

its not worth converting because it takes longer, and u have to encode at a low reso, its not worth it

why would he have to encode at a lower res? and a 20 min divx 3.11->4.12 conversion doesnt take all that long (about 12 1/2 min) and im using 30 fps, but i think with your framerate youll be fine anyways with 3.11 (although ive never tried it, id assume playback quality isnt less that half of 4.12 at 30fps which is about the equivalent)

Divx Audio is (as I remember) a hack of the windows media audio pack from the 3.11 days. Your audio should be fine, but remember to read the sticky by krypt aboot how to go about all this. I'm gonna go try a divx audio file or two in a couple, cus i wanna see if it'll play better, I've had really bad luck with the lame acm codec. The compression is comparable to a radium mp3 stream, more people used radium/lame cus mp3 was more popular, and plus people had different choices aboot audio codecs. For the guy wanting to be lazy and not convert, just re-convert all your files to 4.12 to get current/legal. Use a bitrate ~500, and try all the audio codecs you have.
Need a Treamcast, Dreamcast modchip, HUGE DC memory card, ASCII-like DC fighter pad, or Saturn Gameshark with tons of backup memory? PM me.
