It depends what you want. Many hosts an offer speed, MySQL, PHP, space, bandwidth and much more, but you won't find a free host that can do it all. Try looking here for some help: http://www.clickherefree.com

Actually, http://www.distanthost.com does :)

No adverts on your site either, but you do in theory have to click adverts every two weeks. I say in theory, as the system has been down for a while, so everyones getting awesome hosting at the moment :)

Wow... That is good hosting. But does that mean that I have to click ad banners, or someone else has to?

If you're not planning on putting up huge files, I could host you at http://www.maximumrandomosity.com. I have lots of free space up there right now

I host a lot of busy little sites on http://aspyre.net/. PHP/MySQL and either a aspyre.net/username or username.aspyre.net/ address. Very reliable and fast. Space is variable. You get unlimited if you're uploading tons of your own beautiful creations, but you get none if you're uploading MP3s, movies, etc. not made by you. :)

Email me using the contact form on http://aspyre.net/ and you can get hooked up. I also have MT and other crap installed for use.

You do. Visitors to your site see no banners.

And you get a subdomain - blah.distanthost.com

I could host you or anyone else who wants to do a site at yourname.sbcglobal.net. No adds, POP3 mail. Only limit is 15 mb per directory, but you can have as many directory's as needed. That's the only size limit that I'm aware off.

I've been disappointed by free hosts (and almost-free hosts like 'cyberwings') one too many times and have decided to avoid them.

<slightly offtopic>Btw, I have some extra space and bandwidth available at my current host, if anyone is looking for cheap toplevel domain hosting for a small to medium sized website, throw me a PM.</slightly offtopic>

Doesnt your ISP offer hosting? Pretty much every UK ISP bundles 30 or so megs of space into your service, and usually has pretty low terms and conditions (any files, any size, offsite linking allowed, no ads etc.).

Also, subdomains and stuff dont matter anymore, just get a .tk
