Dialing Dreamcasts
I probably know the answer to this, but I figured I'd ask anyway.
My friends and I usually take DC games back and forth to one another to play games. We each have a DC of course. I bought Unreal, and it seems to be the big favorite lately. Unfortunately, we can't play w/ more than 4 players + bots cause the DC can't readily handle it. Not only that, but the whole split screen thing is kinda annoying, even on my friend's 27". So here's what I wanna know:
Can I set a DC to accept direct connect? Can I just dial into my friend's DC using mine? Without connecting through the actual internet?
I realize I'd need two TVs... which is no prob... he has a 20" screen TV in another room...

I thought Unreal Tournament wasn't online any more?

unreal is still online (as of two weeks ago). sega took down the servers for its games (except the PSO games of course)which it directly hosted (ooga booga, sports games, daytona USA [which it never really owned anyway], bomberman online, and chu chu rocket (i may have missed one- oh yeah, outtrigger). however, everything else like starlancer, unreal, etc. are still online. speaking of outtrigger, that game has an option to change the server i think. anyone tried this one out? maybe what was proposed here with unreal could be attempted with outtrigger which absolutely kicks ass online.

I never got to try Outtrigger online. I bought the PAL version, which lacked online support completely, but managed to borrow a US copy. Unfortunately nobody was on the servers so I never got a chance to play it. That game needs a sequel.

Are you sure you're not thinking of the link cable, which uses the serial port?qw3rty wrote:I heard that some japanese games (e.g. Power Stone 2) have the option for modem-to-modem play (direct connect).
Does anybody have a list of direct-connect games (JAP) ?

Ahhh Yes.. The Link cable!
I can't understand, why! WHY?! WHY?! Why, the link cable was never fully utilized?
I think the cable was only used for two games in total. What happened? Did SEGA for some reason request companies no longer support the cable? Was it because they wanted people to use SEGA NET instead of directly linking DCs?
I have two dreamcasts and a few TV's. Every crappy split screen game could have become 100% better if only it could have used the link cable or had the option for dual monitor support... it just blows my mind that the technology was there, but never got used.
How much would a cable like that sell for? $25? I'd pay that...

They've got an unofficial link cable for $25 at Lik-Sang. I'm more excited about the GP32->DC cable myself .Chainfist wrote:How much would a cable like that sell for? $25? I'd pay that...

me too. still wonder what it will do.They've got an unofficial link cable for $25 at Lik-Sang. I'm more excited about the GP32->DC cable myself
basicly thats how everything was for DC. dreamcast seems like a test for the "next generation" consoles (xbox, cube, and ps2). To see if people liked it or not. it has everything those had. I think the kron said it, that online gaming was released 4 years ago on a console, and people are now just starting to get it.it just blows my mind that the technology was there, but never got used.
