Has anyone ever connected a NES PowerPad to a computer before and if so how?

Ok, I got the powerpad hooked up to my computer using the DirectPad Pro interface but I need to somehow edit the program to add the interface for the powerpad. The circuitry inside the power pad uses the same two chips inside a snes pad, but when I select the snes on the properties, it shows a couple of buttons pressed. Is there someway to alter how it reads the data and put that in the program. I looked at the source code for the joypad reading routine but I don't know what to do.
