60mhz

Post by Bluce_Ree »

I've noticed that people have bought Ikaruga and found it runs at 50mhz on a pal DC, my total stupid newbie question is how can they tell? If you dont see it running at 60 what do you use as a reference point.

If your TV was running at 50 or 60MHz, I imagine you'd likely see a really really clear picture for about 2-3 seconds and then a crapload of blacksmoke pouring out of the picture tube....

(for anyone who doesn't get this, TV/Monitor refresh rates are measured in Hz, not MHz...)

I can usually tell 50Hz from the boarders on the top and bottom of the screen, and my TV has a menu thingy on it that displays the Hz its running at anyway :p

Ikaruga's borders on a PAL DC are VERY noticable - set it to Vertical mode and you'll see the borders at the top an bottom.

One thing that I've been wondering for a while is how do TVs in the UK run at 60hz without interference? The reason that PAL TVs run at 50Hz is to avoid interference from the mains, which is also at 50Hz - the interference occurs within the refresh cycles, as far as I understand it. So how do TVs run at 60Hz in areas with 50Hz mains - is it still 50Hz, but with 60Hz screensize, or is my theoretical knowledge totally wrong?

I'm not too clear on this subject either. I have a few DC's here and all of them are modified to play imports. I'm using a kickass Sony bigscreen TV with 50Hz (PAL Standard, also much cheaper to get here in Holland) but still it supports 60Hz without any problems. The stores here say the same but I don't understand the difference anymore. PS2 did NOT support this option in all their games at that moment and most of them runned in 50Hz which sucks in my opinion.

I can play all imports on 60Hz on my modified DC's.

The TV is just Multi-Sync. The PAL60-Mode (60Hz) is just a NTSC-Mode but without the ugly NTSC-Color - its with PAL-Color-System.

The PAL-TV's switches like a PC-Monitor the frequenzes, but only the two possible modes.

Get an RGB scart lead for your Ps2 and kiss the borders goodbye........well......at least for those games that have a 60hz mode. But the future is looking good, companys like Namco and Capcom who always made horrible Pal conversions are finally seeing the light.Virtua Fighter 4 has a 60hz mode and so does Tekken 4.Maximo is Pal optimized(50hz but no slowdown or borders so it feels like 60hz) and word it Onimusha 2 has a 60hz mode aswell.Only problem with an Rgb scart lead is that your dvd movies will come out all green because of the macrovision but if you have an Action Replay 2 you can get rid of that ;).

I used a RGB cable, but at that time not all games supported 60Hz yet. Also the overall inferiour quality of PS2 games at that time made me dump the system within a couple of weeks. I you played DOA2 on the DC & PS@ you'll know what I'm talking about.
