It makes me feel so old that this site will be a quarter century old soon.

Re: Happy 25th Birthday Dreamcast
Makes me feel worse than I don't care about 9/9/99 anymroe.
Sometimes, I even regret spending so much time here and have no money to show for it.
This is a mad rant, but people here had mad skills and it is a shame we couldn't monetize them.

I've learned so many skills and made so many friends along the way. Why does the money matter?

Re: Happy 25th Birthday Dreamcast
My reply is a little over 2 months late but I don't check here as often as I did in 2002 But I agree with you it is insane how much time has passed. I've been registered for over 22 years. The Dreamcast is basically as old now as the Intellivision was in 2002 when I signed up. I may have signed up in August 2002 but I lurked for quite awhile before then. I still remember how I first discovered DCEmulation. Like many I searched for a Dreamcast Emulator. I had a Dreamcast and many games but was just interested in seeing in emulation of the Dreamcast was possible on PC. If I'm remembering right their was a fake emulator called Nightmare that even back then I knew was clearly fake.
I ended up on DCemulation and didn't quite understand what I was looking at at first. There was NES and SNES emulators which I thought was odd. Why would those be on a Dreamcast site? Then at some point it hit me........Wait a minute they are talking about an NES emulator on the Dreamcast!! I was so excited at the thought of that. I ended up burning NesterDC on a black Memorex CD-R was absolutely amazed by it. I could play NES games on the Dreamcast hooked up to a TV! This was so much better than emulating them on the PC. Being able to play them on a TV was just like playing on the original console imo. I remember me and my older brother playing Contra on it. SNES emulation was never really playable at that point but Genesis became decent. I won't mention what Genesis emulator I used, you know what with the high drivers and all. The sound wasn't great but I found for Genesis games I wasn't familiar with it was ok. I remember playing quite a bit of Daze Before Christmas with my nephew on that emulator.
Those were the days weren't they? Back then I was all about the 80s and 90s. I would have never thought that I'd be looking back at that time in the early 2000s with nostalgia. Remember how I talked about Perfect Strangers? In 2002 it had only been off the air for 9 years. The same is if I was talking about a show that ended in 2015 now. Or what about Knight Rider? Oh man I was OBSESSED with Knight Rider. It went off the air in 1986 which would have been 16 years ago in 2002. It would be like talking about a classic ancient show from 2008 now.

Because my parents don't pay my bills anymore.
When I didn't have bills to worry about, I enjoyed working on these sites.
Not that I won't do it, every now and then I get in touch with a dev and write a wiki page...

Re: Happy 25th Birthday Dreamcast
It's great that Dreamcast homebrew has been having somewhat of a renaissance. Sega Saturn got a lot of homebrew the past few years, and that's great, but Dreamcast is the real 2D powerhouse.
Saying that the GTA 3 port is extremely impressive is an understatement, especially getting the PC port to run on a stock Dreamcast with half the memory of the PS2. Always thought it'd be left as a what-if. I check in on the progress on X occasionally. It's cool to see how granular they've been getting - doing stuff like optimizing models to reduce polygon counts without sacrificing form. KallistiOS is a beast.
When I was a kid I used to try and get all the A-level emblems in Sonic Adventure for hours but I could never figure out how to clear some of the later Sonic stages on time. Not too long ago I was watching a speedrun and the tricks the runner was using to clear levels were so impressive I wanted to learn them, so I hooked up the Dreamcast and got on a kick. Even had to run out to and get some CR2032 batteries to play Chao Adventure.

Re: Happy 25th Birthday Dreamcast
I tried the same thing for Sonic Adventure 2 back in the day. I even bought the SA2 Strategy guide. I really wanted to unlock the secret Green Hill Zone in SA2. I was never able to do it, and the fact you had to do stuff with the Chao to get some of the emblems kind of ruined my enthusiasm to do it. I played a ton of SA1 and SA2 back in the day but had zero interest in the Chao garden. I ended up being able to play it by downloading some CD that was loaded with save files. You'd load the CD up on the Dreamcast then pick the save you wanted and it would copy it to the VMU. It was a pretty fun level to see but idk if it is worth all the time and effort of getting all 180 emblems to unlock it.Eviltaco64X wrote: ↑Mon Dec 16, 2024 8:11 pm

Kind of off-topic but speaking of the Chao Garden I don't think I ever played any VMU minigames on the Dreamcast. The only one I remember actually trying was Pinta's Quest in Skies of Arcadia. I don't remember really anything about it, I think I tried it once or twice but just wasn't interested. The Gamecube version fixed it by letting you get the VMU game items from collecting moonfish.

The adventure series continued rise in popularity is amazing. Especially now that they stand in such high contrast to the boost games.Eviltaco64X wrote: ↑Mon Dec 16, 2024 8:11 pm When I was a kid I used to try and get all the A-level emblems in Sonic Adventure for hours but I could never figure out how to clear some of the later Sonic stages on time.
