Speed Test

Post by DanteJay »

Ok, so for many years I used to live in what would be considered part of the Greater Toronto Area. My internet connection speed was 3.5mb down, and .6mb upload. I lived in an area they considered a "pocket" where lots of infrastructure was around me, but not necessarily available to me. Mainly, lack of a cable internet connection.

Now that I have moved up to the sticks, basically in middle of nowhere, here's my speed test.

Really?

I hate you, Bell.

I pay for 30mb/s ... and in my part of town, with the cable connection, you get exactly what you pay for, so I've always been happy.

I'm paying for Rogers "up to 24Mbps download, and up to 1Mbps upload". So I too am quite happy with the Rogers service, especially because it's much faster than what I pay for.

However, before with Bell DSL I was paying around the same price for a connection of "up to 6Mbps download, and up to 1Mbps upload", which always tested at 3.5Mbps download, and 600kbps upload. Also, because my line was maxed out with the fastest speed it could handle, the connection would frequently drop out for 5-30mins several times a month. Pitiful.

I'd rather have my 6mb $45/mo AT&T DSL back than keep my 16mb $35/mo Comcast cable. At least DSL was a constant speed across all websites. With Comcast, I can download stuff just fine but once I jump on YouTube or Netflix, the connection completely dies. It's very common for a 5 minute YouTube video to take 10 minutes to load, or a Netflix TV show to buffer in low quality 4-5 times through a 40 minute show. But yet I can just download the show in HD on Rapidshare in 3-4 minutes.

Have you tried changing your DNS? I had that problem with comcast until I switched my dns to google's dns server.

I'm not going to lie, I have no idea what that means. Please explain because I'd try anything to get internet streaming working.

EDIT: Nevermind, I just got on Google to look it up. I followed Google's tutorial on their Public DNS and put it into my router. And I made two discoveries:
1. My router is freakin' old. I can only use the IDv4, not the v6. So yeah, I might have to get a new router soon.
2. Holy crap, after entering Google's DNS into my router and iPad, I just watched 20 minutes of Youtube with no loading problems whatsoever! I'm going to keep testing it the next couple of days, but if this continues to work this well, I think my Comcast problem might be solved.

An aging router can give you a lot of trouble, especially an aging modem as well. I never worried about my old cheap ass router because I always used it wired on my desktop... until I bought a new cisco for around $75, and a new DOCSIS 3.0 modem for around $120. World of difference.

Well the modem is only 9 months old, but I've been using the same Linksys wireless G router since...oh...at least 2006. It was top of the line right when G was taking over B and cost me $170. I tried to buy a new Netgear router 4 months ago and the thing was so incredibly terrible I gave up on the idea of a new router. I just need to buy a new Linksys.

And as for YouTube, tried it tonight and it was sluggish. Still actually loaded something, which is still an improvement, but not well at all.
