Is there an advantage of this adapter against the Broadband Adapter?

You mean other than the fact that...it's available?

Other than that point, I think there's just too many differences to really realistically compare them, isn't there?

BoneyCork, I would be love to buy 4 or 5 of these if you're still working on getting them. Christuserloeser's idea of setting up a distribution network would probably be a good idea, it would save you a lot of effort and probably save everybody some money (though international shipping costs ain't what they used to be anymore...especially for items as light as this).

I think I've had the one dreamcast system I use so perpetually tied to my PC that I just didn't consider that I might use dreamcast software without needing a BBA; doh! My bad. I would definitely use this.

Hi

I'm an English guy in China

I've been chatting to the maker of the sd card adapter online.

I'm buying one for myself. If you want me yo get you one send me a message.

If enough people want it I'm sure you can get a good deal on shipping.

Currently shipping is way more expensive than the hardware

Cheers

Hi guys, after looking into it, the Paypal fees for using Chinese money through Paypal are just ridiculous and there's simply too much arsing about involved. On top of that, after thinking about it, I'm just not prepared to bulk-buy a product from this guy then ship them untested to you guys for money. If you don't mind about refunds then fair enough, but I don't want to be in that position.

Sorry for any inconvenience/disappointment - but I like this community and don't want to take responsibility for something I can't control.

I will speak to the guy again later and see if he can setup a Paypal account and deal with you guys directly.

So, I'm a little confused: what exactly can and cannot be done with this?

This can be used as RW storage for the DC via serial port. There are some pieces of software to take advantage of this along with a replacement BIOS that apparently does similar.

Functionally it is less useful than a BBA or serial cable except for the pragmatic concerns of connections (no need for the DC to be tethered to a computer or computer network). This picked up sort of quickly because it doesn't require any components, direct wires to the SD card slot. A serial cable can do anything this can and provide a way to interact in real-time with the data on the other end. A BBA can do pretty much everything this can as well but due to the much more complex nature of the BBA interface it would be significantly more complex to transparently hook BIOS syscalls into a BBA as opposed to the serial port.

Long story short, it's a place homebrew can put data and save files. You can put data files on a CD, but then you can't access them and play CDDA tracks at the same time, and you obviously can't put save files on a CD. Think of this: a version of Quake where it loads the data from the SD card so that you can play the background ambiance tracks from CD during the game, and save your current progress just like on a PC.

Too bad nobody can buy these in bulk. I want one of these so bad lol. Oh, and thanks for posting this as news, but I think the real credit goes to Basil. I made the video about this after seeing a news post he made at Dreamcast-Talk.

I ordered from buyfromtaobao.com and mine has made it to them and been shipped out to me. Total cost was $10. Hopefully it will arrive in the next week or two.

I just ordered one from buyfromtaobao too, my Dreamcast is in the attic and hasn't been played in over a year, but for £7, even if it's crap or I don't use it I won't exactly be gutted. I'm not even entirely clear what it's capable of, but I'll post my thoughts once I get it.

I thought my total cost was $10, but buyfromtaobao decided that I hadn't paid shipping from them to me yet, so I had to tack on another $10. Total of $20 still isn't bad though. I am thinking I will get one of the new hacked up models with the built in VGA and SD though. Those things are sweet.

Just read this, so basically it is safer to order from this site.

hilltopper, did you ever receive your order through buyfromtaobao.com?

I placed a large order through them at the beginning of November and after much hassling, they finally say they have the adapters and are ready to ship them out. Nearly two months later. Of course, they claimed that this was the manufacturer's fault, that he needed more time to put together enough units to fill our order. It wasn't that large of an order and I see that the seller has sold a lot of units to other people in the meantime so it sounds very fishy to me. Plus, buyfromtaobao never responded when I asked them to forward me their e-mails with the seller.

Maybe they're on the level, but I do wish I'd researched more before using Buyfromtaobao. There are other services that have better reputations. Taobaonow, Taobaoagent, Obook.

Oh well, I think we finally will get the adapters. Those of you who ordered with me...hopefully some time in January.

I wonder what type they will be, though? I see that the more recent versions of the adapter don't have a wire anymore.

I would have preferred the older ones.
