Re: 3D Realms closes doors
I told you that it wasn't possible for 3D-Relams to close their doors.
Anyway the game will come out soon, all this fiasco will end soon.

Shenmue 3 had very little to nill amount of development time. That's comparing apples to oranges.BILAL_XIA wrote:Haha how about I say it will come out before Shenmue 3?
So, how 'bout $50 via PayPal says DNF isn't going to be released now 'till 2011.

Re: 3D Realms closes doors
I'm, just going to go ahead and keep believing it's coming soon. Mostly cause I don't like the alternative.
I think the company will be good though, they've been developing for almost a decade without going down, I'm sure they can last a few more years.

Re: 3D Realms closes doors
At this point I wouldn't be surprised if Take Two gets the trademark rights to "Duke Nukem Forever" and farms it out to another developer, just for the sake of getting a game with that name released.

Re: 3D Realms closes doors
They could even hire the Duke Nukem team since they all have been fired and use some sorta smoke and mirror technique to obtain all the designs the employees made at 3d realms and release the game.
Just thinking.

Re: 3D Realms closes doors
While I have to agree with him about what he says about Take 2.
Although 3D-Realms made it clear that they never got any money for the publshing rights of DNF because they sold the publishing rights to GT Interactive and Take 2 bought the publishing rights from them.
So techincally the game is 100% property of 3D-Realms.

Re: 3D Realms closes doors
Apparently Gearbox's gonna finish Duke Nukem Forever.
SourceThough the game has been presumed dead so many times you’d need an abacus to keep track, “Duke Nukem Forever†is very much alive – and he’s coming to store shelves soon.
Take Two Interactive Software pulled off one of the video game world’s biggest surprises Friday, announcing not only that the over-a-decade-in-development first person shooter was nearly finished, but backing that claim up by giving the 150,000 people attending the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle the chance to play the game.
The rest of the world will get its chance in 2011 – on the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
First announced in 1997, “Duke Nukem Forever†became an annual presence on vaporware lists and a running joke among gamers for its molasses-like development schedule and frequent restarts. A year ago, it appeared the final nail had been hammered into the game’s coffin, when developer 3D Realms ran out of money, let go virtually all of its employees and began a legal war with its publisher, Take-Two Interactive Software.
That suit was settled earlier this year, however. And while 3D Realms is no more, Gearbox Software, the studio behind “Borderlands†and “Brothers in Arms†(and staffed with a number of former 3DR employees), has taken over development on the game.
"Gearbox has enabled die-hard key Duke Nukem franchise builders and skilled veteran game makers to stand together and deliver,†said Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software. “All gamers deserve a happy ending and after all of us gamers feeling the full range of emotions about Duke Nukem Forever, I am thrilled to be in a position with the trust, power and means to make it happen.â€
“Duke Nukem Forever†is, technically, a sequel to 1996’s “Duke Nukem 3D†- though normally a sequel takes no more than three years to put together, while “DNF†started in the Clinton administration.
The game missed ship-date after ship-date, and many began to assume it would never see the light of day. Many pointed to 3D Realms co-founder George Broussard as the reason for the delays – noting that his obsession with perfection for the title resulted in a never-ending cycle of changes.
The bad times are over now, though – and the game is nearing completion. And after 13 long years, some of the industry’s most core fans at PAX have finally gotten to see for themselves if the wait was worth it.

Well all former 3D Realms employees are at Gear Box, so what is the difference?

Re: 3D Realms closes doors
Come On, that should be good enough.
As all the ones who truly cared about the franchise are still on board.
Also we don't have a list of fired employees and hired employees that we could compare with.

Re: 3D Realms closes doors
Triptych apparently already finished it (or bits of it, but not assembled them into an actual game yet), and Gearbox are helping them finish it off, and are handling the console ports.
Gearbox (unlike Triptych, which is all ex-3D Realms guys who didn't want to let the game die) actually have a history of releasing games (and of doing ports), and they apparently own the appropriate rights to the thing. The reasons why DNF was never finished don't seem to apply anymore.
So, yes. It'll get finished. I wouldn't even be surprised if they hit their release target.
However... I really don't care, aside from the usual curiosity, and surprise that they actually seem to be finishing the thing. I doubt anyone else will either. Most of the target audience for this kind of game probably weren't even born when Duke Nukem 3D came out. Fans of the original have been able to play hundreds of other FPS games released in the last 14 years. Aside from the name, and the ridiculous development history, it doesn't seem to have anything to differentiate itself.

Re: 3D Realms closes doors
A Duke Nukem without anything from the last 14 years of FPS will be shit.
A Duke Nuke with anything from the last 14 years of FPS won't be Duke Nukem.
To get around this, you're going to get a somewhat modern FPS game, attempting to be as asinine as possible.
It'll come off as desperate at best.
