Wii Sucks
I need a Mario fix but the Wii sucks. Do you all completely agree that the Wii is bad for gaming all around with its dumbing down of video games? In general most of the fun games are released in Japan anyways. Take away the staple series and your left with kids games and waggle games. The one thing that would've made the console great was if it had spot on motion control. Doesn't even come close. At this point the only fun aspect of it is some Wii Zapper games are great. Rant over. Thoughts, concerns? Will Nintendo break their cycle of shitty consoles?
I see the Wii bad for console gaming in the same way the PS2 was.

What were their other shitty consoles? I can only think of the FDS and the 64DD, which were Japan-only peripherals. Will Nintendo break their cycle of shitty consoles?

Re: Wii Sucks
Heh, I've been saying that pretty much since day one. I haven't played with mine in quite a while. There has been a major lack of games for regular gamers, most of them are catered to people who didn't play games before the Wii, or they are aimed at children. And I don't mean I want Wii versions of Modern Warfare 2 or GTA4, I am glad it's different than my 360 and PS3 (I mean, I don't need THREE consoles with the same games being released on them). I just mean there have been no games of that caliber on the Wii, no games that hold my attention for that long. And besides that, I think the console has just been executed poorly. It needs a better online service, it should have been HD, it needs more internal storage, the controllers should have had WiiMotion Plus sensitivity from the start, the system needs to be more powerful, etc.
But I think the worst part is how poorly Nintendo utilizes it's franchises. No Donkey Kong, EarthBound, F-Zero, Kirby, Mario RPG, Pilotwings, Star Fox, Yoshi's Island or Zelda games (Twilight Princess doesn't count, it was developed for GC..). I guess Kirby and Zelda games are finally supposed to come this year, the 5th year of the Wii but who knows with Nintendo's release schedule.
With the Wii Nintendo tried to capture a new audience, but in the process left their old one out in the cold.
P.S. Other shitty consoles: VirtualBoy (oh I hate to admit it!) and in many ways, the Gamecube.

Did you play through NSMB:Wii and No More Heroes 2? Red Steel 2 is also coming out, and actually looks good.I haven't played with mine in quite a while.

Re: Wii Sucks
They took some risks with the Wii to try and come back out on top, and while they worked in the short-term, things haven't worked out so well since then.
Going after the non-gamer market really boosted system sales, but non-gamers don't buy games. My parents own a Wii, they buy one game for it every Christmas. On top of that, they aren't informed purchasers so there's no point in a developer making a good product in the hopes that they buy it - they just need to make decent box art.
Making a low-tech low-cost rival machine made the Wii much more attractive and gave it a good headstart, but the lack of technology has ruled it out of all multi-format games and that price gap is shrinking every couple of months.
Leaving out HD and decent online capabilities kept the cost down, but these 2 features have been behind every technological success of the last few years. I've never really been a fan of things like social networking, but it's a very popular form of communication and Sony/MS were quick to jump on the bandwagon.
Nintendo were quick to pump out quality versions of the main franchises when the Wii launched, but then they were all spent and there isn't much left. It's the first-party development that attracts gamers to Nintendo consoles, but it's on a go-slow right now.
Interestingly, I don't think the Wiimote was a mistake. It was everything else.

Re: Wii Sucks
Simply put the Wii had a lot of potential. I say the Wii is like the PS2 in the sense that shovelware outnumbers quality titles by orders of magnitude. Another issue is that the Wiimote is fine I guess, but it just doesn't have the sensitivity to make the Wii a must have. What happens to Nintendo when the PS3 Wand or Project Natal blow it out of the water? Maybe not as much as some would hope but it'll get the big N worried for sure.

Re: Wii Sucks
Isn't the Wii the spiritual succesor to the Dreamcast, concerning 'homebrew'.
No modchip required, and it has a significant advantage over the DC, or even a modded Xbox, processing power wise.
I'm just waiting for the price to drop one more time, before picking one up. My brother already 'donated' his PS3 to me, but it's a slim with no Linux homebrewing capacity.

Re: Wii Sucks
There has been shovelware, there will always be shovelware. Atari 2600, NES, SNES and the PS1/2 have a crapton of shit for every Final Fantasy and Mario. Look hard at the 360 releases – do you consider this a good game?
Owning a XBOX 360 and a modded Wii makes for great gaming. The Wii definitely does have a lot of shit. Online sucks. But there is a major source of good, casual games that fill the gaps. I think there are plenty of good games for the Wii, especially with WiiWare. If I want to experience hardcore violence and adult situations, the 360 keeps my toddler-level, beer-addled imagination occupied.

Re: Wii Sucks
That's my thoughts on the subject too. I also have a PS3 but I don't see any point in that other than a BR player. For more mature games and online play it's 360 or PC, for everything else it's Wii.pixel wrote:Owning a XBOX 360 and a modded Wii makes for great gaming. The Wii definitely does have a lot of shit. Re: Wii Sucks
The Wii is STILL on top in console sales is NA. Nintendo doesn't really give a fuck.
But who thinks that maybe... JUST MAYBE... they'll be investing all of this profit into a real gaming console for the next generation? Who knows. It would be badass, but Nintendo seems a lot like Sega after the initial success of the Genesis right now.

Re: Wii Sucks
They shouldve programmed all games I would care about with the option to use a gamecube controller. Motion controls ruins games as they tend to be horribly unecesarry. Is there any real reason why I cant just use a fucking normal controller to play Super Mario Galaxy? Or New Super Mario Bros Wii? Motion controls are absurdly bad if they arent executed near perfectly, they arent reliable and most games arent even meant to use them.

I avoid any mod-chipping whatsoever. Why would one mod chip a Wii, when they could run an exploit? Region compatibility?Owning a XBOX 360 and a modded Wii makes for great gaming.

I think Wiiware is the worst of the 3 download stores. The best games on it are all better played on the PC with a mouse.

I wonder why Nintendo still has no DVD player support for the Wii. It's capable of playing them...

Re: Wii Sucks
They probably figure that if a Wii user wants a DVD player, they can pick one up for $30 at Wal-Mart (if they don't already have one). Why eat the license fees to add a feature that doesn't seem to stop anyone from buying a Wii, and why try to sell a "DVD Channel" that has to compete with $30 DVD players?Eviltaco64X wrote:I wonder why Nintendo still has no DVD player support for the Wii. Re: Wii Sucks
The funny thing about the Wii is that I never really play it much when I'm at home alone. However, whenever I get together with friends, the Wii is all we play. Between New Mario, Dokopon Kingdom, Tatsunoko, Tiger Woods 10 (for frolf), and Mario Kart, we never even bother turning on the PS3 or 360. And when we go over to my friend that only has a 360, we would rather play board games than turn on that system. Everything we would want to play is pretty much Live based.

Re: Wii Sucks
Together with friends we never play anything besides online FPS. First it was Halo and now it's MW2. To be honest I wouldn't play anything else multiplayer.
