Laptop question... is this price too steep?

Post by Cyphix »

Apparently being a student at DeVry means reduced pricing on certain laptops from CDW-G.

But to me it still seems too expensive... Is it really too expensive or is it just me?

I just wanted to hear your thoughts before I drop money on this thing... I'm in desperate need of a new laptop.

Yup that looks very expensive to me, you could pick up a very decent Macbook Pro and have change a lot of change for that.

It's a workstation computer, so the quality is going to be very solid. Personally, I'd go with either a T-Series ThinkPad or a Macbook Pro instead.

Seconded. It's a nice machine, but you can get similarly specced/equally well built machines for under $2000.

I'm not too sure why the link is showing $2,200.. I get it for $1,200.

But still, I think it is a tad overpriced.

My brother bought this Akoya notebook for €700 ($1000 USD) which retailed for €800 a few days ago. That's the same price as you'd pay for the HP you linked to - provided you can get it for $1200. Still, the HP got a much smaller screen (15" in comparision to 18"), half the RAM (2GB vs 4GB), lacks a Blu-Ray drive (incl. CD/DVD writer functions), a smaller HDD (160GB vs 320GB, although that'd be 5400rpm instead of 7200rpm in the HP so for me the HP wins in this category while others may prefer the bigger HDD), and probably doesn't have two graphics cards (more powerful one for stationary use... crazy shit).

So yeah, it does seem a bit overpriced.
Insane homebrew collector.
