Re: GTA on DS
My best friend has said good things about it. He is like me and prefers the GTA 2 style of game vs the new ones. I am gonna try it out tonight and I'll let you know what I think.

Re: GTA on DS
It's pretty good, and certainly the best GTA is ever gonna be on the DS. But I already have 2 portable GTA games on the PSP already, which in my opinion are far superior.
I think it's all about the camera for me to be honest. I never really liked the top-down view (I hate driving and not being able to see infront of me), and it seems even worse on the DS because all the new (brilliant) 3D details are being jammed onto such a small screen. It just feels cluttered.

Re: GTA on DS
I'm the same way. I hate the top-down view, otherwise I'd buy the older ones for the sake of being GTA. My friend was talking about how good GTA3 was when it came out and I just laughed before I found out they made it fully 3D.BoneyCork wrote:It's pretty good, and certainly the best GTA is ever gonna be on the DS. I think GTA could only ever really work as a side-scroller.

Re: GTA on DS
It's pretty good, really, although it can't compare to the PSP-GTAs.
The camera is sometimes a problem, but over all, the controls work quite good.

Re: GTA on DS
It's very good. Occasionally not being able to see in front of you is annoying, but mostly it works very well. A LOT OF STUFF in the game, it feels as full and varied as the bigger console versions. Controls and general gameplay are somewhere inbetween the first two GTA games and the later fully 3D ones.
Definitely worth a purchase if you don't mind the change in viewpoint.
Biggest complaint: targeting system is flaky. Feels worse than in GTA III/VC, though there are fewer enemies on screen at once so it doesn't matter as much.

Re: GTA on DS
Sounds good to me. I think I will give it a buy. I liked the old school top down GTAs as well as the new ones, so I think I will like it. As long as the controls are good.

Re: GTA on DS
Well I played it, it isn't exactly top down view it is like Isometric (right?) Something like Sonic 3D Blast, hence the game is quite fun and everything but it has no voice acting.Luriden wrote:I'm the same way. I have already played or should I say read Phoenix Wright trilogy and I am so not looking forward to more reading.
Resident Evil DS had voice acting, why can't GTA?
That is a deal breaker for me.

Re: GTA on DS
Wow, is voice acting really so important on a handheld that you refuse to buy a game without it? Honestly, I would prefer text mainly because handhelds are meant to be played on the go, and most places would be inconvenient to have the volume turned up.

Re: GTA on DS
Not to mention but with all the content I'd read is in this game, it seems like there wouldn't be any room for voice acting.

Re: GTA on DS
Game is a lot of fun. I really enjoy the drug dealing aspect, they really made it a crucial part of the game. The view doesn't bother me, its not exactly top down, but kind of like Zelda DS, its at an angle. The camera does get mixed up a few times but hardly ever. Definitely a buy of you like the series.

Re: GTA on DS
One thing I do wish is they'd bought recognizable licensed tracks. I don't mean full audio versions, it would just be cool to have MIDIs of songs I like on there. Buying the right to use a version of a song like this is very cheap in comparison to licensing an actual recording.

That would be really cool. It seems like they were pressed for space as it is though.

Re: GTA on DS
I desperately need voice acting on my Next DS game, my first game was Brain Age which probably doesn't even need voice acting that much.melancholy wrote:Wow, is voice acting really so important on a handheld that you refuse to buy a game without it? Earphones?
After that I got Resident Evil DS, which had full voice acting. After that I haven't played a single game with voice acting and when I saw the all to cool intro of GTA and realized that I will be reading my way through I just couldn't take it anymore, all the Phoenix Wright games have really made me sick of reading.
Did a quick search on MiniNova it says only 64MB, I have a 2GB EZ Flash for my DS so I am pretty sure storage space isn't an issue for the DS.Skynet wrote:Not to mention but with all the content I'd read is in this game, it seems like there wouldn't be any room for voice acting.
Yes, this should've been done, although I think Audio Music in general could have been incorporated?Lartrak wrote:One thing I do wish is they'd bought recognizable licensed tracks. Re: GTA on DS
Flash memory is cheap but real DS carts are limited by the capacity of the actual ROM chip inside the cart which cannot, in my understanding, be any larger than 128MB.BILAL_XIA wrote:Did a quick search on MiniNova it says only 64MB, I have a 2GB EZ Flash for my DS so I am pretty sure storage space isn't an issue for the DS.
I believe the 128mb ROMs are also significantly more expensive than the smaller ones but could be mistaken.

Re: GTA on DS
I remember hearing something about an official DS game using a 2 gigabit card. Then again, I'm not a DS specialist.sixteen-bit wrote:Flash memory is cheap but real DS carts are limited by the capacity of the actual ROM chip inside the cart which cannot, in my understanding, be any larger than 128MB.BILAL_XIA wrote:Did a quick search on MiniNova it says only 64MB, I have a 2GB EZ Flash for my DS so I am pretty sure storage space isn't an issue for the DS.

Lately, I've been playing through GTA IV. I can't say I like it more than the last-gen versions, but it did receive a major graphical upgrade and offers a lot more.

Re: GTA on DS
There are some 256MB games, and if I'm reading things right the protocol allows a ROM up to 4GB. Of course, this doesn't mean that Nintendo's suppliers are actually prepared to make a ROM that big anytime soon (and the security scheme doesn't seem to lend itself to a multi-chip setup).sixteen-bit wrote:Flash memory is cheap but real DS carts are limited by the capacity of the actual ROM chip inside the cart which cannot, in my understanding, be any larger than 128MB.BILAL_XIA wrote:Did a quick search on MiniNova it says only 64MB, I have a 2GB EZ Flash for my DS so I am pretty sure storage space isn't an issue for the DS.

Re: GTA on DS
Nintendo has truly made something stupid then?
In this day and age where game requirements go upto multiple Giga Bytes them make something which is barely over 100 MB, I don't know quite what to say.

Re: GTA on DS
Would you consider a handheld with a decent selection of games that has sold incredibly well stupid? Handhelds have most certainly never been on par with game consoles.BILAL_XIA wrote:Nintendo has truly made something stupid then?

Barely over 100 MB? As Ex-Cyber said, the maximum storage capacity is around 4 GB. It's just expensive to make such small cartridges with a larger storage capacity, but I'm sure as time goes by, the technology will cheapen, and the developers will push the console even more until we really do see something that pushes the DS to it's limits.
