PC to DC mouse conversion?

Hi, I haven't done any type of modification to any units or peripherals before. But, I was wondering if it would be possible to convert a PC mouse (serial?) to something compatible with the DC? Could I cannibalize an old controller for the controller wire, and port connector maybe?

If this has never been done before, could someone recommend a place I could find some type of adapter? Assuming they could still be found of course...

I doubt that circuit is even slightly compatible with official software since it plugs into the serial port, not the Maple bus. It could probably be adapted to the Maple bus with the addition of a CPLD (which probably demands a new firmware as well, but maybe not...).
