Recommend some horror movies

Post by Luriden » Tue Nov 11, 2008 2:34 am

Comedies have gotten old for me lately, and I've been sinking into the horror genre lately. I grew up hating horror movies, and yet I can't watch anything BUT horror now. I've been watching back to back horror films the past couple weeks, catching up on movies I've heard of or heard a lot about. I've mostly been watching newer horror movies. Here's what I've seen lately:

The Good:

Saw 1, 2, 3, 4 - Love them all. It's not necessarily the gore that's entertaining, but the story and twists and turns keep me interested. I still haven't seen Saw 5 yet, but I'm eagerly waiting for it to come out on DVD (don't really like going to movie theaters). Every one of these movies ended with my jaw on the floor, and I love watching a new Saw movie and being able to think back and piece things together in the past movies after I'm done watching it.

The Hitcher - Good movie, kept me entertained throughout. I thought Sean Bean did a way better job than Rutger Hauer did in the original. Sean Bean just puts off a much creepier vibe, like you seriously don't want to cross paths with this dude. Rutger Hauer just seemed like a lunatic. Not bashing the original, but this is one of the few cases with horror remakes where I think they did a much better job this time around.

The Hills Have Eyes - It was a bit too much at times, but I liked it. I liked the comeback the main character made, considering the whole movie leaves you feeling hopeless for the characters. Haven't seen the sequel yet, I'm not sure if I should bother, the reviews aren't too good.

Battle Royale - I wouldn't consider this to be a horror movie, but some classify it as one. I just watched this tonight, and I loved every bit of it. I was riveted to my seat the whole way through. Great story, great characters, and I thought the ending did a nice job of closing the movie. It was brutal, but like Saw, it really got me thinking about what I would do in the main character's situation, and kept me thinking even after it was over. I love movies like this. I'm not big on subbed movies though, that was the only drawback, so if you're to recommend me a foreign film please make sure there's an english audio track available. I suck at reading subtitles and paying attention to what's going on in the scene at the same time, I'm just bad with multitasking like that.

The Bad:

Hostel 1, 2 - Shit movies. I get the "point" they're trying to make with the movies, but they're still stupid. The main selling point for the movies is the gore and torture factors, which Saw outdoes in every way, shape, and form and still gets away with a WAY better plot.

Dawn Of The Dead (Remake) - I'm terrified of zombies, but this movie really bored me. It wasn't bad, but it was a tad bit too predictable. The special effects were cool, but that's all I'm gonna give it.

The Ugly:

The Strangers - Pathetic. They spoil the ending before the movie even starts, the rest of the movie is just 90 minutes of hiding. There's hardly ANY dialogue in the movie whatsoever, and the characters are as dumb as rocks. The opening scene of Scary Movie 1 pretty much summed it up I think. This was one of those rare movies where, once it was over, I felt seriously robbed of my time. I gained nothing of it, enjoyed nothing in it, and was genuinely pissed off about it.

Halloween (Remake) - The guitar player from Slipknot gets his own movie. Lolz.

Now that I jizzed my Ebert all over these forums, based on those mini-reviews (for those who bothered to read), see if you can recommend me some good horror films to check out. I'm not into the ultra-gory exploitation films, I just want something with a good storyline that provides good thrills along the way. Gore and special effects are a bonus.

The Descent
Event Horizon
The Thing (Carpenter remake. Anything by Carpenter is worth watching, really.)

Comedy-Horror is more my thing. Black Sheep, The Frighteners, and Shaun of the Dead are some of my favorites.

Unfortunately I had someone spoil the ending for The Descent for me, but from what I've heard it wasn't that great anyway.

Event Horizon was decent.

Haven't seen The Thing, I'll add that on my list of movies to see. It's a classic but I totally forgot about it.

Shaun Of The Dead was fantastic.

I always enjoy the original Halloween, the sequels range from mildly entertaining (Holloween 4) to absolutely retarded (H20 and Ressurection).

I absolutely love the first one, lukewarm on Rasen. Never got around to the others, even though I own the box set. Do they get better?

Nosferatu. If you're into silent films, get the original. If not, Werner Herzog's 1979 film was brilliant also.

You listed Saw as good cinema. You don't deserve an example.

Plus, it isn't a horror movie either. It's a thriller. And a drama. And a soap opera.

I still love you, though.

Not necessarily better but they're all likable and worth watching just to get the whole story, the prequel is pretty touching from what I can remember- and they've all got that horrible claustraphobia of tight camera angles and every shot virtually has some water or a tv in it, just to keep you on edge constantly.

While I thought the Hitcher remake was terrible from what I saw of it (didn't watch it all), I think the Hills Have Eyes remake (which I assume is the one you saw) is on the whole superior to the original. But the original is worth watching. Skip both sequels.

Others: The Thing as mentioned. It's great. Evil Dead 1/2/Army of Darkness.

All the Dead films (Night, etc) except maybe Diary.

Return of the Living Dead (ignore the sequels).

Bio-Zombie you might like. Bit hard to find bit of Chinese horror. Pretty silly but I enjoyed it.

Dog Soldiers and the Howling for werewolves.

Silence of the Lambs is excellent.
