New stage, new enemies (lots of them actually), a huge influence from the Shinobi series (both design and music wise), some nice transparency effects here and there and... Sakura's Realm is here :D

Hey, Falco Girgis here.

I just wanted to let you guys know how much I truly, sincerely respect and admire the fact that despite the Kickstarter, you guys never faltered or even hesitated to kick ass... Even I have to admit that with a set back like that for ES, I would have had a hard time picking up and carrying on.

I have no idea how negatively it actually impacted you, but as far as I or anyone else can see, it didn't even phase you or your project. You picked up and kept going, kind of as a symbolic "fuck you, we'll do it anyway" to the people who doubted you. Do you remember what I said when I initially saw your teaser before I apologized? You SURE showed me, man.

You have my deepest respect for your resilience, and I hope that more developers will look to the example you guys have set when a project hits road blocks... The game looks amazing, and I can't wait to play it. I will definitely send some love your way when we get around to posting our next big update on Kickstarter!

Thank you for your words, Falco.

It took as a few weeks to recover from the KS hangover and rethink our plans, but in the end we simply couldn't let it go.

I do remember :P Your initial reaction was logical, there's been to many undelivered promises and too much vaporware in this little world/market we move in.

We indie DC devs can learn from each other. We came a bit late into the scene, maybe, and are aware that means we haven't fully earned the community's trust and that's perfectly fine, but it also means we learned from other teams successes and mistakes. We'd like to think we did, anyway xD

And best of lucks with ES development too!

Carlos

Xenocider meeting. A good start, I would say.

Image
Juanjo shows off some really cool equipment none of us understands a word about. He's currently working on the music for the bonus stages.

Image
Chui (Linux), Abel (Windows) and Carlos (Mac). Time for lots of tests, tweaks, arguments, and pizza.

Image
So, while I'm busy with some layout design tests, apparently Abel's phone is warning him to update his watch? What a strange world we live in.

One of our first "real" physical tests for the Steelbook Edition. High quality vinyl over a slight relief on the surface (both front and back covers). Other options being explored at the moment :)
Only 8 copies still available! http://retrosumus.com/product/xenocider ... k-edition/

Image
Accessing the bonus stage by reaching a high score or finding a specific item? More enemies or just stronger ones? Power-ups or upgrades between levels? Decisions, decisions...

My personal favourite version (all my DC games are japanese, or indies with jp-style covers):

And from our Xenocider work weekend, a couple teasers of stage 7... ;)

Quite a long post this time: a report on our recent work weekend, a reminder about the last few shown stages, and a couple new reveals: Shinobi-like bonus stages! :)

As you know, PAL Edition has been sold out for some time. Last few copies of the Steelbook Edition available now:
http://retrosumus.com/product/xenocider ... k-edition/

So just as a reminder, as we've been receiving some inquiries about this, we won't be using cheap tin boxes containing a regular DVD case (or disc sleeves or anything like that), but proper quality Steelbook, double-disc cases like the ones in this pic we shared some months ago.

Also, for those who didn't read our last update:

Although we could have kept the original (late June) release date, we’d rather polish and beta-test everything a thousand times and make sure it works flawlessly than rush the release just to meet the deadline. And that’s what we’re planning to do. We are now aiming for a Fall release.

After a great weekend at RetroEuskal where we presented out latest beta (full report coming to out blog), here you have a new audio teaser for the volcanic wolrd of Kvika: a dark, suffocating hell infested with magma beasts.
Can you guess what Juanjo's influences were when creating the music for this stage?

By the way, there are now only 4 copies of Xenocider Steelbook Edition left!

Maybe it's just me, but I hear elements of Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor" in there.

A couple users mentioned that and we were amazed, as apparently one of the most famous themes from the classic Columns is basically a homage to Bach's work. So in the end, our tune ends up resembling that from Colums :o

Actually, the references Juanjo got (from me) were Golden Axe, The House of the Dead and some Sonic tunes from the MD classics. While I think the House of the Dead influence is very clear, there's still some percussion heavily inspired by some of those Sonic mechanical/fire/lava stages.

Sakura's Realm looks great, but the combat and the obstacles are divided in separated sections (lots of spiked logs with no enemies, lots of enemies with no obstacles). I suggest trying out some diverse combinations of enemies and obstacles together, to put a greater focus on strategy & timing.

Oh, you are absolutely right. All those elements still need to be mixed/distributed in a different way :) Thank you for keeping criticism constructive!

Great work. Is it possible to make the road go up/down like in Road Rash for the Genesis?

Suggestion: I don't know how much this would impact on the framerate, but you could interpolate the animation of the animated horizon background by rendering it twice, alternating between the previous and the current textures and setting an alpha value for the overlay based on the elapsed frame time.

Our latest beta is playable right now at Gamescom thanks to Retrospiel, so Xenocider is sharing their booth with the likes of Antarex by 1985alternativo, Tanglewood, Alice Dreams Tournament, Saber Rider and more :)

I'll pass your suggestion to Chui and Abel ;)
