new mod - Way of the Exploding Beats

Post by Bluce_Ree »

This is mainly one for the UK gamers here probably. It's a mod based on 3 of the best ZX Spectrum beat em up games. You will be able to play as the main characters from Way of the Exploding Fist, Renegade and Barbarian.

Fist guy is almost finished and I'll probably have all 3 playable characters done in a couple of days.

The loading screens from all 3 games all feature on the main title page.

I'll also be using some nice heavy beats for the music as composed by myself.

Enemies will be taken from the above games and also Target Renegade, Yi Are Kung Fu and Fist 2.

links to screenies here...

yeah but you know how us speccy fans feel about the c64. I'm looking into using IK+ also, it's just that the graphic style may be too different from the ones i'm using. The more games the better tho, I'm not going for any sort of realism. Just nostalgia!

since we're talking old-school beat-em ups...

my first experience... kung-fu for the NES... a side-scroller but you gotta love that repetitive beat... and the cheap ki-i's!

this may sound off topic, but for some reason I think the base character that comes with mugen would fit in, i think his name was karate ken or something, no I know thats wrong, but hes a guy that does karate and comes with mugen (or at least use to)

Target Renegade was ssssoooooo the most popular game on my Amstrad when I was younger. Me and my mates still play it now occaisionally as I've got a new old Amstrad from a car boot sale.

it is using graphics that are 20 years old but it's going to be amazing ;)

anyway it's different from all the usual megaman mods and you're all going to love it. its the law.

I seem to be posting all the time about retrocomputers right now, so here's another one:
Way Of The Exploding Fist was originally a BBC Micro game, and from there it was ported to the more popular 8-bit machines. The C64 version had a problem - you could use the foot sweep move all the way to the last guy if you knew how to time it. When the Spectrum version came out, it was altered so you couldn't go as far using that one move, meaning that it was marginally the better game in terms of playability. Originally though, it's like Elite - a BBC game. There you go, fact fiends.

I looked at those new screens, and I really like it, especially the sprites, its much different from the other mods. I like how it looks with the detailed backgrounds because it offers a lot of nice contrast, but I'm not sure if you planned to replace the backgrounds with ones to match the game (as opposed to that standard bor level).

am thinking of mixing things up by maybe taking backdrops from arcade/amiga beat em ups. might not tho.

anyway, all 3 playable characters are done. have made 2 enemies and am working on the rest. should have a demo available some time soon (if anyone cares!)

aww, man... Old school computer geeks represent!

i think it's about time i hook back up my trusty c64 (god, my old man brought me home so many games for that system back with his ring of bootlegging buddies)

So much better than the crap version of renegade on NES...
