I was once told that listening for a Canadian accent when speaking to someone you first think is American, then correctly asking "so, what part of Canada are you from?" earns you some major social kudos. However, I can't pick up a Canadian accent, so I just ask anyone who sounds American this question; either gaining said kudos, or offending a yank, which in many ways is a better outcome.
