New port (Dream in the Dark - AITD)

Post by Corbin »

Hi all,

Just letting you guys know that what free time I have right now will be spent porting Alone in the Dark (I-MOTION) to the Dreamcast (a port I call "Dream in the Dark"). A wobbly port was made in the early 2000's called "Free in the Dark", and seeing the source code on my computer a few hours ago gave me the idea. If finished, I'll release it for free - all you would need is to have a copy of the original Alone in the Dark (GOG sells it). I *think* the demo can run, so I'll go ahead and pack it in.

How many people would like to have this? It's a disassemble of the original code (hint: barely legal?) but Mr. Raynal gave permission to the original author to do it, so I'm taking that as my cue. I've only started looking and studying the engine but it doesn't seem difficult at all to port. I've gotten it running in Linux as a start, and since the GL is so simple I can port it in no time. I'm only worried about cleaning up the majority of the bugs left in the original code.

Currently only Alone in the Dark 1 is supported most of the way through.. it has collision detection issues I think I can graft up using some custom code of mine. I'll keep all posted on updates. The other "inthedark" games have major issues, unfortunately.

Anyways <3

Sounds awesome to me... so long as it doesn't come at the expense of Scourge ;)

It won't, this is a "me" thing. I think it's a justification to satisfy my lingering stress with my baby. She's great, but it gets stressful and SCOURGE ranks up there too. Having a nice outlet to release frustration is what this project is really about.

Yeah, it's a great game. If I can fix all of the scripting engine issues, this port should be able to play AiTD2 and Jack in the Dark, as well. Not sure about Alone3 though, unless someone else can bypass the copy protection on that thing. Possibly TimeGate could run, though I'm not holding my breath for anything with that.

I've always heard that the DC has a surprisingly large survival horror library. Looks like when all of your projects are completed this will be even more true. cool!

If you are actually capable of porting the game why not just contract Fredrick Raynal and do it legally.

I've never played the original and would love to buy and add it formally to my library.

On an unrelated note I would love to interview and ask what happened to Agartha?
How complete was it before Sega pulled the plug on it?

He doesn't own the rights - Atari does. And I've had personal experience dealing with those money-hungry bastards (excuse my language) to never attempt that again. They were the reason Hypertension was delayed for YEARS until most recently.

This (using FITD as a base) is the safest way right now. Atari doesn't have a great rep when it comes to releasing sources, anyway.

On a related note, I did get Dream to compile, but holy crap does it have a host of issues as it stands. The original FITD release wasn't finished and it's more broken down than MC Hammer's bank account. I've recorded a video of the gameplay, aside from the incredibly annoying framerate (locks in at 30FPS instead of ~60 randomly, but I think that's an SDL issue) there's just so many bugs. Alone 2 hardly plays, but it's a treat as most enemy AI is stupid (makes the original game much easier...trust me). I'll try and get the video uploaded.

Below is a screencap of Alone 2 running in Dream:

AITD1 though, aside from the hit detection (guns don't work, but it's not like you need them to finish the game) it plays through 100%.

Didn't Atari go belly up?

I read Gameover Videogames now owns the rights to the name.

Was this recorded from a Dreamcast ? or a Dreamcast emulator ? if so that'd be impressive! :o (and sure would deserve a newspost)

Can it be ported to Windows?
Will it one day support Alone In The Dark 3 - Ghosts in Town?
Will it one day support Time Gate: Knight's Chase?
