Yeah, that's really weird. Even crap VGA boxes like the ones from Madness Gameware or Nyko are going for like $30 or 40. Actually selling for that price, too, not just some hopeful seller starting it at that price and not getting any bids.Fragger wrote:$25 USD? They were rather cheap in the past, I once saw a stack of VGA boxes for R$30 each.

What's crap about the Madness Gameware VGA box? I had one years ago and it never seemed bad to me...Sweater Fish wrote:Yeah, that's really weird. Well, potentially crap, I should say. Most of the third party VGA boxes, just weren't made with the same quality standards as Sega's box.
I had a Madness Gameware VGA box that had some sort of interference between the sound and video lines so that when the audio got really loud, the picture would get wavy.
I also have a VGA cable that has a bad connection at the VGA plug so that unless it's super tight, one of the color signals will sometimes drop out giving the whole screen a blue-green tint.

Sweater Fish is correct about the disadvantages of using a third party VGA box. Unfortunately, the official VGA Box from SEGA was either: 1) not released at all in North America; 2) released only for sale on Sega.com; or 3) released in such small quantities as to be considered nonexistent. So basically, if you don't get a third party VGA box, you are SOL in that regard.
I have owned both Madness Gameware and Performance VGA boxes. Neither of these is an officially licensed product. Each features poor connectors and insulation and wiring, so you will not always get a nice snug fit in the video out port of the Dreamcast system. So it takes a bit of fiddling to get them to work properly, even after lo these many years since I bought them. Luckily they were cheap, on closeout, so I don't think I paid more then ten bucks for either one.
When they work, they work GREAT. But I do forsee a time when no matter how much fiddling I do, these just won't output a proper video signal at all. That will be a sad day.
As for the audio... though these feature headphone jacks, I don't think they are actually meant to be used with either headphones or non-powered speakers. It really is just a line level output, nothing more. The bandwidth must be pretty limited on the internal circuitry, so if you turn up the volume, it degrades the signal to your VGA/LCD/HDTV monitor. However, there is no such degradation if you use a nice set of powered speakers or just output the signal to an amplifier and adjust volume from there.
Once upon a time, there were instructions online to make your own VGA box for Dreamcast. Take care, happy gaming, enjoy life!

That's the exact same one I have, which I bought for 12 USD last year. I see VGA cables have become pretty rare on Ebay ever since.Grimlock wrote:http://cgi.ebay.com/Sega-Dreamcast-VGA- ... dZViewItem
You feel at ease as you flock with the masses,
What do you see with your heads in their asses?
Keep on railing at what I believe,
Call me insane and I am proud to be.
