PSX on Dreamcast?

Post by Grim04 » Fri Dec 22, 2006 12:57 pm

I'm new to the entire emulation/modding scene. I recently got another Dreamcast, and I was wondering if anyone knows where if I can get it to be able to run/play PSX games.

If I can't use a selfboot disc, anyone know where I will be able to buy a mod chip (with instructions on how to install it?).

General emulation of the PlayStation never really got anywhere on the Dreamcast, but there were three commercially-released bleem!cast discs, each of which allowed you to play one of three PlayStation games on the Dreamcast:

Metal Gear Solid
Tekken 3
Gran Turismo 2

What's great about these discs is the enhancements they make to the game's graphics, which can be seen here. They aren't being sold any more, but you should be able to find some on eBay.

There have also been a couple of attempts at a free homebrewed emulator, but nothing has so far been released that will play a game at a reasonable speed.

There was also an illegal version, known as blue disc version of bleem, an early build of the emulator that had fair game playing capacity, but was very early. Technically, it may fall under warez, considering it was not supposed to be release, due to agreements by the extra binding sony against bleem! and rand linden. If you are interested, you won't be able to find it here for of course board rules, but you can probably find it on a portuguese or spanish equivalent of this page. It gives you a good idea of what bleem! was truly capable of, the open emulator that is the basis of MGS, GT2 and Tekken 3 emulation. One can only imagine the capabilities of the final build.

I haven't played the MGS, or GT2, but I was really impressed with Tekken 3, the legal emulators are worth picking up.

Legal issues aside, the main reason that isn't discussed or distributed here is out of respect for Rand. Back when this place was hopping, he used to be fairly involved.

Honestly, there aren't any worthwhile PSX emulators for Dreamcast. You're going to have to turn to Xbox or PC for that (or just use a PS2--they shouldn't be that expensive any more). There is one project in the works called PSX4All, which started off as a port and partial rewrite of PCSX for PalmOS (and, specifically, the Tapwave Zodiac). I haven't heard anything recently, but DC is supposedly one of the systems they will be releasing for.

I wouldn't hold my breath, though...especially if you're looking to play anything 3D.

As cheap as the PSOne is nowdays, I can't see why you would waste so much time and effort into an emulator to play PS1 games on the DC.

I think he means "why put that time and effort on PSX emulation when they could work on other systems".

I'd love to see Winning Eleven 2002 on Dreamcast.

The reason why I want to play PS1 games on DC is because they could look so much better playing them on PS1 or 2 just makes them look really dated. I played Syphon Filter on PS1 damn it looked sad then I played it on DC it could give Head Hunter a run for it's money.
