[DC] <-> Arcade ports/conversions

Post by crc73 » Thu Jun 02, 2005 4:39 am

I'm looking to get a list of games which have been on both the DC and on arcade hardware, a difficult task, I think. I think I might have them listed into 3 categories:

1. Direct Ports - these would be *almost* arcade-prefect ports, in both look and playability (subjective), but obviously some games on the DC would have extra modes, etc. Examples in this category would be Crazy Taxi, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and Mr. Driller

2. Similar - Some games in this category may be temporary, until someone could confirm whether the game should be placed in the above, or below category (I haven't played all games on both platforms). An immediate example I can think of is Le Mans 24 / Test Drive Le Mans. Another would be Street Fighter III 2nd Impact / Street Fighter III: Double Impact. They sound like the same game, but could be very different - only someone who has played both could confirm for sure.

3. Dissimilar - I can't think of many to put into this category yet, but one might be Spiderman. Both had Sega involvement, and obviously the same licence, but different in the sense of year released, and style (3D vs 2D). Names might be different too, but with obvious links (Frogger/Frogger 2:Swampy's Revenge).

Anyway, I've thrown up this quick list (comparsion between klov.com and planetdreamcast.com). I'm sure there are plently more (Japanese especially), so feel free to add/subtract/alter anything on/to/etc this list.

If you can, state the game name (or names, if different on both platforms), and which category you believe it should be in (and why if you like - especially helpful if the games are dissimilar).

Finally, if it's done before, let me know - I've looked, but haven't come across a list like this yet. I don't want to be wasting my own or anyone elses time. Also, any helpful comments on how to list (additional categories, etc.) are very welcome.

Anyway, here's the first rough list:

Thats what I'm asking for, peeps to fill in the missing spaces, and to be specific with titles.

I have "Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves" up there - if there are any other versions, let me know and I'll add them.

House of the dead 2 is also already up there.

Was Virtua Cop released on it's own? I know it was released in the Sega Smash Pack. I'd be grateful if you could specify if games were released in a pack - just realised I missed out on the Namco Museum, and a Ms. Pacman release. Will add them. Thanks.

Was it Virtua Cop 1 or 2 released on it's own? I can only see a reference to VC 2, and a JAP only release.

That probably brings up another category (PAL/NTSC/JP/US) - will add Last Blade 2 to the list.

Virtua Cop 2 was released on its own on DC!
I think the Le Mans on Dreamcast has nothing to do with the arcade game. I can recall 3 games, one by Konami (2D raster graphics, don't remember more) one by Jaleco called Super GT 24 which ran on model 2 and one called Le Mans 24 which ran on model 3 step 1.5, but none of them has to do with the DC game (by infogrames).

*Noted* Thanks for the info. I know VC2 was released on it's own in Japan, but what about a US or PAL release?

Not sure, but is it possible that Tokyo Bus Tour (naomi) is the same or similar to Tokyo Bus Guide (Dreamcast)?

Your category "dissimilar" makes no sense the way you state it. It should only apply to games released around the same time on both arcade and DC hardware, but was different. In order to find just those, I would limit my arcade searching to Model 3, Naomi, Naomi 2, "Naomi 3", Atomiswave, and Hikaru hardwares. Naomi/2, Atomiswave and Hikaru all have the same processors as the Dreamcast and for the most part the same video and sound hardware.

Without restricting this search to that hardware, you will come up with games that may be related to older arcade games but are in no way, shape or form ports.

Compilations are an obvious exception. If you read what he said he was comparing Frogger 2:Swampy's Revenge to the original atari arcade game frogger when they are COMPLETELY different games and not in any way intended to seem like they are the same game with the exception of the name.

Arcade Releases you're losing:

The King Of Fighters Evolution (Based on KOF99, was also released in arcade).
The King Of Fighters 2002
Powerstone 2
Guilty Gear X
Garou: Mark of the wolves
Vampire Chronicles
Atari Anniversary
Chaos Field
Giga Wing
Shikigami no Shiro 2
Silent Scope
Le Mans 24H (not sure about this)
NBA 2K1
NBA 2K2
Dance Dance Revolution 2nd Mix
Dance Dance Revolution Club Version

Not arcade releases, but you can count as similar:
ESPN International Track & Field
Puyo Puyo 4
Tetris 4D

I think there's also a recopilation of Arcade Games by Yu Suzuki called:
Yu Suzuki Game Works
But I'm not really sure about this.

Thanks for all the others you listed; are you sure about the 3 above? I can't find good hits through Google for them (all DC).

When I was thinking about the categories, I was just thinking for completeness, of similar sounding game names, but really different games entirely. When someone comes along and sees Spiderman for the DC, they can check the list and see that it's a completely different game on the arcade, instead of thinking maybe it had been omitted from the list in the first place.

Anyway, given the size of the list, I'm beginning to think maybe it would have been a better idea to list the non-arcade DC games!

Thanks for all the additions - quite a few still aren't on KLOV (didn't realise Powerstone 2 was in the arcades too). I'll start putting them into the categories over time, although it looks like most will be in the first.

WOW! I never realized how many DC games were originally in the arcades. That is a great list...one that most DC owners might want to collect for themselves!
