Email services on the Dreamcast
Ok, I was searching for some new ISPs that I could stick on my site, but I came up with nothing. I came across Seglda's homepage and found a link to HotPOP.
It will work on the Dreamcast, but you need to have an ISP that will work with SMTP servers. The current list on my site doesn't have any free ISPs that will work with SMTP servers, but I do know of a free ISP that will work on the PC, but it will not work on the Dreamcast because the password is too long.
It would be cool to get a list of free POP/SMTP email services that people can use on the Dreamcast and PC. I'm gonna try and find some ISPs that will work, but in the meantime, if links to email services could be provided, that would be cool.

Ok here is the deal. Most ISP's require that you use their SMTP server for outgoing email. If you pay for a dialup service then you should have no problem sending and recieving email over pop3. For instance if you have earthlink dialup, you would use smtp.earthlink.net for your smtp server, then the pop3 server for whatever email service your using.
The problem is, from what I understand none of the free isps available so far have the SMTP server available for those accounts. The MSN one's might. Check msn.com for the available smtp server for that ISP.
As of yet the ONLY way I have found to send email over pop3 using a free isp, is to set up a free juno account for 10 hours a month.
Go to fackue's Dreamcast Help - http://consolevision.com/members/fackue/
then encode the name and pass. Put in this ISP information, then check or send your email. This account will only work on the dreamcast for about 3 minutes or so before it disconnects you.
Possibly could use DreamPassport's multiple ISP configuration to set up a convenient method to use the side juno account, otherwise you'll be juggling your ISP information around anytime you want to send an email.
Once again if you pay for a dialup isp service, an smtp server should be available to you through your ISP.
SMTP servers are regulated because of spam. If there were open SMTP servers anyone could use then spammers could abuse them.

if there was a smtp server for msn do you think people would waste their time making tools to access your msn mailbox without msie5+ and outlook?LordNikon wrote:Check msn.com for the available smtp server for that ISP.

i wonder who gave you this stupid theory but you should probably make it a sticky in your stupid forumLordNikon wrote:SMTP servers are regulated because of spam. If there were open SMTP servers anyone could use then spammers could abuse them.
there are actually free smtp server thats dont require you use any isp to use them.
the smtp servers that require you to use a specific isp just do that to make you subscribe to the isp, something similar to the toy you find in your kellogs
EDIT: nice sign night, the fact you cant even write my nick correctly, which is only 5 letters long, show how much your superior to me...

Port 25 is the standard port used by smtp. Many ISPs have started to block that port outside of their own system as an anti-spam precaution.speud wrote:i wonder who gave you this stupid theory but you should probably make it a sticky in your stupid forum

The following ISP's(as well as many others) block port 25, forcing you to use their SMTP server. It is impossible under these and many many other ISP's to use an alternate smtp server. (Whatever mail server your trying to access would have to use a port other than 25 in order for you to access it and send out an email. Most free pop3 email services only offer on port 25. So in all reality you would need your own webserver for this running smtp on anything but port 25.)

speud do some research next time, your making it far too easy for me to make you look like an idiot.

i dont think i look like an idiot, youre the one who said there was NO free smtp server that doesnt require you use a specific isp, then said A LOT did that but not all.
i use a totally free smtp on dc, its not connected to any isp, it only works in france tho, but there are quite a lot of free smtp servers available on the web.
its your time to make a search before posting wrong infos here

Ok lets go through my quote step by step:speud wrote:basically that means "there are no free smtp anymore because of the potential spamming" to meIf there were open SMTP servers anyone could use then spammers could abuse them.
Part1: "If there were open SMTP servers..."
This part here means...If there was a freely accessable smtp server
Part2: "...anyone could use..."
This part here referrs to the general public, an average person on the internet, so anyone
Part3: ...then spammers could abuse them.
This part is saying a spammer could abuse the smtp server.
So in the end lets review....
My quote referrs to reasons why an ISP would want to block outside use of port 25 for smtp.
speud said "there are no free smtp anymore"
Sorry, your translation of my quote is incorrect.

Thanks for the info LordNikon, I appreciate it.
I'm gonna try these email accounts on my DC, I was told you can enter this PeoplePC ISP (free ISP) in your DC through Unreal Tournament (to bypass not being able to type in the whole password), so I'm gonna try that out and test these email accounts I've made.
If all works good, I'll let ya know what I did.
EDIT: Sh*t. The password is still too long - Unreal Tournament supports up to 30 characters in the password, and the PeoplePC password is 32. I wonder if it's possible to have unlimited characters for both username and password fields? Someone wanna throw a cheap program together that could edit the ISP settings for either PlanetWeb or DreamKey/DreamPassport?

Thanks speud, although that tool only supports 16 characters in the password field.
I was thinking the same, but I hope this isn't the case. Never know untill you try it, if someone wants to do a favor and make an app that has an unlimited password length field, I'm willing to try it. I'd try making it, but I can't program for DC.speud wrote:also maybe the max length you can input corresponds to the max length in the flash structure, if so it wont help
