http://windows7.digitalriver.com/ To the uninformed, you're welcome. Make sure you select the option to opt for Professional instead of Home Premium. If your studies have anything to do with computers you may be able to score this for free however.

Nice note on the Pro edition bit. It's actually very easy to miss.

One thought on this... Wonder if they're actually bothering to check whether you're still a current student or not? They claim they'll bill you for the remainder if they find out you're not. Seems unlikely to me.

Edit to add: Didn't even notice this was an upgrade edition... And I'm switching hardware, not so sure if my weird OEM Dell version of XP Home will work. Thoughts?

Windows for thirty bucks, you say? I wouldn't move to Windows if they PAID ME thirty bucks to!

Also, anyone know how long this promotion will last for? I'd like to hit this deal up before it's gone but my next few paychecks are already reserved.

My campus should sell it for the same amount, as they did with XP and Vista. If you want I can check out my schools computer store and see how much it is if you want to paypal me the cash for it later on.

I'm about to try the same thing so I'll let you know in the coming weeks.

I'm just throwing this link up as an option. My school for example has a million weird deals for Windows 7 but none are set in stone quite yet. If it ends up being cheaper, I'll get a refund before it's too late.

On another note, I googled around, and apparently you can call the Microsoft store at 1-877-696-7786 and order this there. You can even get the full retail version shipped to you for about $38.

Could I get in on that? That'd be awesome.

Why not just warez it if you're going to purchase it against the license terms? Why waste your money?

Maybe because updates are vastly more likely to check for activation hacks or leaked product keys than they are to verify enrollment.

What's funny is I've actually contemplated buying it. Never bought an OS before. I'm on a legit XP home that came with my laptop. I wish I'd gotten in on the earlier superior pre-order pricing of Windows 7 ($50ish IIRC), but I wasn't planning on upgrading to a computer good enough to handle Windows 7 for a year or two. Things changed.

It's also a little funny because I was planning to take another class this fall, but it ended up filling up. I was *this* close to being eligible under their license rules. Oh well.

BTW, the Windows 7 RC will be good til June 1st. Starting in March it will shut down every two hours, which is pretty damn annoying. I just got a key for it myself. Good idea on Microsoft's part.

BTW, when it comes to upgrading. You have to go from Vista to 7, you can't jump from XP to 7 correct?

From what I read, you CAN go from XP to 7. However, if you're planning on doing this deal, if you call the MS store and tell them you want the full version, apparently they'll do it for the same price.

I've used a Dell OEM disc of XP Professional on a few of my non-dell computers. Everytime, it's worked. I've noticed that it does require activation if it's non-dell, though.

It's not an upgrade in the same way vista to 7 is, but a full install with an automated migration system.

It's up to you but your best bet is to use to back all of your data up from XP wherever you want and use the copy of Windows 7 Upgrade you have to do a clean install.

Well once I find out how much it is going to cost at my school I'll decide if I am going to pick it up. As long as it does not eat my ubuntu partition, as I have my XP partition slimmed down to about 15GB.
