Fox Set to Recast Futurama; Nerds Everywhere Explode in Rage

Post by DaMadFiddler » Sat Jul 18, 2009 2:58 am

Not sure yet what this will mean exactly, but having an animated show replace Maurice LaMarche would be almost like Warner Bros. replacing Mel Blanc.

As excited as I was about the return of Futurama, FOX has once again ruined that experience by their callous actions. According to no less than cast members John DiMaggio, Phil LaMarr, and Maurice LaMarche on their Facebook pages, a casting notice has gone out to replace actors DiMaggio, LaMarche, Billy West and Katy Sagal.

Personally, I'm betting that FOX doesn't want to pay for these talented folk and would much rather cast "sound-alikes" at a much lower rate. A similar incident happened on Matt Groening's other series, The Simpsons, which resulted in a hefty raise for the voice actors.

Nevertheless, any attempt to recast these talented folks should be the first indicator that the new season is poorly executed and just a cheap attempt to push out product.

Read the full call sheet after the jump and if you want, send Casting Director an email telling him how much you enjoy the recasting idea by clicking HERE.

As a nerd and Futurama fan, I'm pretty close to exploding.
Only FOX would try recasting voice actors after their animated series are 10+ years old.

well the show is going to have a much lower budget since it will be on comedy centrel. its rumored to be that its just a ploy to build hype for the show by saying they changing cast, to only reveal they have signed the oirginals on board. who knows. I think the cast is making somewhere around 15-30k per ep or so. simpsons cast make like 400K per ep and the simpsons only work 2 days a week.

LOS ANGELES–The Star has learned exclusively that the voice cast of Futurama has just signed a new contract with Fox after weeks of intense salary negotiations.

As late as last week, the network was threatening to replace the original voices of Matt Groening's cult-hit cartoon, to the point of actually announcing a casting call for voice actors to replace them.

The compromise agreement, with the studio paying more and the actors accepting less, comes after the announcement of a 26-episode pick-up here by Comedy Central. Futurama also airs internationally in syndication, has produced four bestselling straight-to-DVD movies (later cut into episodes) and an upcoming feature film.

A Fox spokesman, reacting to this story, insisted that only three of the cast have so far signed the deal, but later added that they expect to have the matter resolved by the end of the day.

Well Im relieved and not all that surprised that it was resolved, but still the thought of replacing the voice actors is just ridiculous.
