Horror movies
Looking for some good horror movies to show to my brothers kids while they are over. I'm going to show them some "Are you afraid of the dark" episodes, but not sure what movies are good to show them.

Re: Horror movies
28 days later, best horror film in years. Shaun of the Dead if you're looking for something a bit less scary?
Re: Horror movies
Hostel. Comes with an important message too, either don't fuck with kids who want something or that you should always help those who you can.
A few fries short of a happy meal.

Re: Horror movies
I've also been on a big horror kick recently. I watched 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks later the other day. Days was good, but Weeks was just depressing. I also watched the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake and The Beginning, both were pretty good, and I usually hate slashers.

Re: Horror movies
Weeks was only depressing because of those annoying little shits!

Re: Horror movies
Call me weak, but I've always had a soft spot for Kubrick's version of The Shining. The music alone is worth it.

Re: Horror movies
It depends on how old the kids are, and how scary you want to go.
This is by no means a complete list, but should give you more than enough options. Also please note that I have not really populated this list with slasher films; I'm not really a fan of slashers, so I haven't seen very many. They seem more concerned with shocking and disgusting you with gore than trying to produce a legitimate scare. For example: the original Alien is much scarier than most slasher films, despite the fact that very little actually happens in the film. Why? The concept and the atmosphere work together really well to build tension and drive a legitimate, worried suspense. But whole essays can be (and have been) written about why Alien works so well, so I'll cut to the chase:
I will divide this list using the best measurement system so far devised by man: salsa ratings.
Mild
Shaun of the Dead
Hold That Ghost!
Nosferatu (silent film, though; may not hold small kids' attention)
Shadow of the Vampire
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Dracula (Universal/Bela Lugosi version)
Tremors
Young Frankenstein
Nightmare Before Christmas
Ghostbusters
American Werewolf in London
Beetlejuice
Medium
The Haunting (original version)
Alien
Psycho
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original version)
Night of the Living Dead (original version)
The Shining (either version)
Spicy
Halloween (original; the sequels are utter garbage)
Poltergeist
28 Days Later
Audition (Japanese--warning: this film is VERY disturbing. Not suitable for young children, period)
The Thing (remake)
Dawn of the Dead
