Share or live by yourself?
I've been looking at places in Sydney, I am now really torn between deciding if move into a shared place or if I live on my own in a single bedroom unit somewhere.
Sharing would obviously mean cheaper rent and more socialisation, but I am the kind of person who likes his own time out as well (I am an introvert who has his occasional extroverted moments).
Just wondering if anyone here either shares or lives my themselves (or has done both) and what do you think of it.

If you don't know the person, its not worth it.
Otherwise, it's not too bad.

I live alone. It's expensive, but it's nice to be able to do whatever you want after work.

I'll probably end up getting a single bedder.
Re: Share or live by yourself?
3 bed room appartments seem to work great. Move in with a friend and the put and add for a 3rd roomate. This way you always over power the domiance of the appartment plus the rent is so dirt cheap when divided 3 ways. Its about $400 after untilities.

Re: Share or live by yourself?
In Sydney you pay between AU$200 and AU$300 per week for a 1 bedroom flat excluding utilities (depending on where you are).
I want somewhere that's near a railway line and bus route and because of that I am really going to pay for it big time.
To get a place with a 1.5 hour commute to work each day through the city then I'd probably be able to get the rent down to $175 to $225 a week, but on my salary I should be able to afford $300 a week without any trouble.

Re: Share or live by yourself?
I've rented with friends and rented with people I don't know, and the same problem has come up often: habits. It amazes me the amount of people I come across who have some pretty low values of hygeine and respect for their housemate(s); leaving plates of half-eaten food lieing round the lounge for days on end, letting the remains of your last shave sit in the bathroom sink etc
I'm not some clean-freak, but I'm not going to live in other people's mess either, especially in rooms where I can bring guests and stuff. Thing is, it isn't really something you can ask people about prior to living with them because you sound like a jerk.

Re: Share or live by yourself?
It really depends how sociable you are and how well you can cope with people being in your space- particularly if they have different ideas of what's acceptable with regards to borrowing stuff, levels of cleanliness etc. Some people I know couldn't live any other way, some people find it impossible. How patient are you?

How old are you also? I know that by the time I'm firmly set in my career, or once I hit my thirties, I don't want to have roomates.

I hated living with my friends, everything turned into annoyances. I think living alone is better if you can afford it.

Re: Share or live by yourself?
Well, I ended up buying into a time share....
just kidding, I got a single bed room place in an amazing location, less than 1 min to the train station, supermarket across the road, more shops less then 1 min away, buses less than one min away, everything is just at my door stop.
The price was AU$285 a week, that's kind of average for a single bedroom place in that location.
So next week I have to start carting my stuff 200km down the road to Sydney.

Re: Share or live by yourself?
I live alone too. Its expensive, but since im a foreigner where i am, culture makes all the difference.
And true, people here are mediocre when they want to clean. My apartment is not the most clean but i do like to keep things organized and clean once a week.
My neighbors, who are 3 that share the same apt, one of them leaves stuff in the living room. Cans, soda cups, fast food bags, even underwear once. The other 2 are pretty organized, except when it comes to game cases, consoles and stuff they use a lot.
I lived with housemates once. Turned to be a nightmare. They didnt like the way i cleaned the mop, etc. Pretty much BS.

Re: Share or live by yourself?
I beg to differ. I've been living with a guy I barely know (I know we go to the same school, that's about it) for a month and a half now. It's great. Lot's of respect for each other's things, no petty annoyances, we keep our hands off each other's food, respect sleep hours, etc...hearld500 wrote:If you don't know the person, its not worth it.
It's much better than living with a friend who knows how many buttons they're able to push before you go nuts.

Re: Share or live by yourself?
Yea, my main concern is that because I am not extremely extroverted that I might get lonely, because I have times when I enjoy other people's company and other times where all I really want is my private time.
I suppose that by the time I start talking to people and making new friends, if I am ever lonely I can invite someone over or go visit them.

Re: Share or live by yourself?
I've been living alone now for about 5 years, and I love it. I had a couple of roommates in college, and those will be the last roommates I'll have until I get married. It's nice to be able to do anything you want without having to answer to anybody. I can be a complete slob if I want and I can be super clean if I want (I tend to go through cycles of each). When I want company, I just have a movie night or game night, or I just invite people over for beer and pizza. It's grrrrrreat!

I agree 100%. You can do what you want, when you want. I tried moving in with friends.... it doesn't work.Vlad Tepes wrote:I've been living alone now for about 5 years, and I love it.
