Setting up a phpBB forum for free

Post by mankrip »

I want to set up a forum for the people at my college. There are some free "we'll host phpBB forums for you" sites out there, but so far I haven't found any that will let me backup the forum database.

An alternative could be to use a free webhost with PHP support and install a forum in it, but it would have to be reliable enough so I don't have the same problems DCEmulation had when trying to backup the forum's database when it was hosted at ZTNet.

The bandwidth usage will probably be very low.

So, any recommendations?

This college is very small and disorganized, it doesn't even have a website yet. It was founded last year.

Plus, I don't want the college to have any direct control over it. It won't have any official relation with the college, it will be just a forum for talking with my college friends.

In my days of using free hosting I have never fouind a really reliable free web host when it comes to SQL databases. Regardless of how reliable and generous they are when it comes to storage and bandwidth, the database part is usually pretty crappy.

When it comes to domains and hosting I've definitely come to discover the only services worth having are ones you pay for, even if they're really cheap. Even $10 a year type hosting will be better than 'we'll host your forum' sites

I agree completely. If you're paying the money, they're obliged to offer you some sort of service. If you're getting something for free, they can pretty much do what they want and you have no real reason to complain.
