Panel links abortion, welfare to illegal immigration

Post by Roofus »

A Republican-led legislative panel says in a new report on illegal immigration that abortion is partly to blame because it is causing a shortage of American workers.

The report from the state House Special Committee on Immigration Reform also claims "liberal social welfare policies" have discouraged Americans from working and encouraged immigrants to cross the border illegally.

The statements about abortion, welfare policies and a recommendation to abolish income taxes in favor of sales taxes were inserted into the immigration report by the committee chairman, Rep. Ed Emery.

All six Democrats on the panel refused to sign the report. Some of them called the abortion assertion ridiculous and embarrassing.

"There's a lot of editorial comment there that I couldn't really stomach," Rep. Trent Skaggs said Monday. "To be honest, I think it's a little delusional."

All 10 Republican committee members signed the report, although one of them, Rep. Billy Pat Wright, said Monday that he didn't recall it connecting abortion and illegal immigration.

Emery, who equates abortion to murder, defended the assertions.

"We hear a lot of arguments today that the reason that we can't get serious about our borders is that we are desperate for all these workers," Emery said. "You don't have to think too long. If you kill 44 million of your potential workers, it's not too surprising we would be desperate for workers."

National Right to Life estimates there have been more than 47 million abortions since the Supreme Court established a woman's right to abortion in its 1973 Roe vs. Wade ruling. The immigration report estimates there are 80,000 fewer Missourians because of abortion, many of whom now would have been in a "highly productive age group for workers."

The abortion connection to illegal immigration was listed under the report's recommendations on federal social policies and potential state legislative actions on illegal hiring.

"Suggestions for how to stop illegal hiring varied without any simple solution," the report states. "The lack of traditional work ethic, combined with the effects of 30 years of abortion and expanding liberal social welfare policies have produced a shortage of workers and a lack of incentive for those who can work."

Democrats contend the abortion statement wasn't discussed, much less agreed to, by the committee. Emery said there was some testimony about abortion during a question-and-answer session at one of the hearings, although he couldn't recall by whom.

That is just pathetic. Seriously, that report is flat-out stupid.

This is stupid.

I thought the whole point of being against immigration was that they're "stealing" our jobs from us. Well, if "liberal social welfare policies" cause Americans to not want to work anymore, then what's the big deal if immigrants come over and take the jobs we don't want? Relaxing immigration laws and letting them all come in legally and work their asses off while I'm sitting on welfare sounds pretty sweet to me!
It's thinking...

It couldn't possibly have anything to do with the self-righteous demagogues who will call them lazy even when they do work (because they don't work "hard enough" to justify a decent wage, even though low-wage workers are among the hardest-working people in the country), or the employers who treat them like crap and look for any way they can to cut benefits, or the healthcare system that bankrupts patients, or the skyrocketing cost of higher education, or the massive and growing wealth disparity or...

Yeah, it's all the fault of that damn "liberal social welfare".
"You know, I have a great, wonderful, really original method of teaching antitrust law, and it kept 80 percent of the students awake. They learned things. It was fabulous." -- Justice Stephen Breyer

"liberal social welfare policies"

yeah right..the U.S. is one of the LEAST welfare dependent societies.. look at germany, the uk,..hell most of europe!

you have to sign away your LIFE to get measely food stamps from the U.S. government..no health care for ANY adult in poverty...that is unless you BEG at the hospital for help..then they may feel sorry for you after sitting in the ER for 14 hours and give you BASIC "get the hell out of our ER" help just to get rid of you..not to mention the homeless issue...welfare my ASS...atleast not in SC..

im sorry but republicans are nothing more than greedy, ass backwards, not WITH the rest of society on this issue, religous zealot idiots...like MOST issues..it's about the DOLLAR to republicans..nothing else.

illegal immigration is CAUSED by republican minded business owners!

it's the cheap way out of paying ATLEAST minimum wage to the workers who work at VERY hard physically demanding jobs like farm work,construction..etc.

they pay these undocumented workers under the table and off the tax rolls to avoid the minimum pay laws.thus causing many U.S. workers who WOULD work these jobs IF paid what they were WORTH to work,to be out of a job.

not to mention their back door dealings in free trade causing MOST of america's industrial, manufacturing jobs to LEAVE the country..for what? CHEAP LABOR...thus saving them TONS of money for the business's they have either invested money in or own.

that's the lick on welfare AND immigration problems.

oh well...long enough rant..

Well at least you're trying hard not to be stupid unlike your redneck bretheren. Just learn where to properly put your capital letters and drop the bigoted view on immigration and you might be fine.
