Can they say the F word on TV in Canada?

Can they say the F word on TV in Canada?

Post by Roofus » Thu Sep 28, 2006 9:48 am

So my "friend" (we'll call him "Rufus") missed Family Guy on Sunday and downloaded it from the usual place. Rufus didn't get around to watching it until last night and was surprised to hear the word "fuck" uttered by a character in the episode! He tells me that it probably came from Canada and that got me curious: can they swear on Canadian TV? And in the unlikely event the answer is no, where might the recording have come from?

Apparantly the ol' Fuckbomb was uncensored in select markets. Some people said it was firmly bleeped, others said it was uncensored. In the US, too.

Yeap, I noticed that when I downloaded it too, must have been from a late-night aired version.

Yeah, the kids can watch mind-scarring torturous violence, but don't let them hear any dirty words!

Does that pertain to actually hearing 'fuck' motions as well?

The best places to find the word "fuck" on normal TV are problably History channel shows (apparantly a historical quote is alright. I think they had an interview with Ed Koch where he said it once)

Or late-night comedy central. They don't censor anything.

That's weird because you'd think by Monday, it would have been all over the news how the FCC fined Fox out of existance.

There is quite a bit of swearing on Canadian TV. Being an avid visitor of the suthern states, it's true that Canadian TV is much less cencored than American TV.

On the news the word can be said if it was in an interview, or something like that. It is up to the news director's discretion, but they will not be fined if it is 'non-fictional'.

Network television shows don't necessarily have this restriction, but various groups will protest and the FCC will eventually come down on programs that do this.

Yeah, Rufus is a real scumbag. Right after he told me that he downloaded Family Guy, I called the police on him.
