Working on a $700 gaming rig.

Post by DCFreak07 » Sat Aug 05, 2006 12:41 pm

Lol. I know it sounds cheap, but it's been tested to run Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 at like 70fps, which is great. My current computer cant even run Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds without lagging, much less Half-Life 2. So I'm going to be saving for a long while to build it. It seems like a cool rig. For more info about it, it's in this months Computer Gaming World.

And by the time you have saved for it you'll be able to get something better for the same money, which is a nice bonus

after looking at the prices of the dual core, this is what i would recommend...

Processor- AMD64 X2 4200+-183

Motherboard- ECS Socket AM2, ATI 3200 chipset and Crossfire capable -150

Ram- 1x 1GB DDR2 -70

DVD-DL burner-30

Case- Nothing special, 450w PSU -30

ATI AIW X1800XL 256MB DDR3 -200

all of that puts you at 663, and i didnt put the hdd in there because you can always get a good sized hdd from bestbuy/comp usa/circuit city for under 50$, and some times there's no mir's. (but like last week, circuit city had a 250gig sata hdd for 25$ after 80$ in mir) but since you just now saving up for it, you can get the hdd, mail in the rebate, and by the time you get it back you will be ready to buy the rest of the computer.

first off, ECS EWWWWWWWWWWWW get a decent branded mobo please... second, 30 bucks for a case with built in PSU..... bad idea, on a system with hardware like that you want a quality brand name PSU, not some freaking chinese botch job worth shit

A lot of ECS boards actually have pretty good ratings on Newegg. I'll admit, a lot of their products are shit, but their AM2 setups look to be quite solid. Perhaps a new leaf?

But for $130 ($110 after rebate), you can do a lot better than an ECS.

And for $200, you can do a lot better than an 1800XL. Finally, if you're going cheap on the PSU/Case, then at least go Rosewill.

That RAM is both needlessly slow and incompatible with Socket AM2 - Swap in some budget DDR2 instead :P

Get a stick of OCZ Value Ram (1 GB) instead. It's cheaper ($76), and you can grab another one to run Dual Channel later. And it's a better brand.

i honestly dont know about the ram compatibility anymore, as i havent purchased it since i got 256mb of pc-100 ram...and now that i have my laptop, it's a whole different story. plus i just started reading up on the new am2 socket, again since my laptop's only a socket 754, i havent even come accross it while reading up on my cpu.

as for the case, yeah, i aggree, i was just showing him what he could get, and i did say it wasnt anything special...

the mobo, i have seen and used (never purchased one myself) but the ones i have used, didnt give me any problems.

and the gfx card, again i dont know, because the last one i purchased was a pci geforce 2 w/ 64mb ram...

ok, so my list is flawed. so how about instead of getting the stuff i listed peice by peice, use it as a guide line of how much you can/expect to spend on each part in order to stay under the budget.
