some snippits of Freeview news for the resident Britons

firstly Channel five will be launching two new Channels at the expense of that waste of time Top Up TV
one is a Kids/'Womens lifestyle' Channel

the other called Five US 'will offer drama, films, sport, comedy and youth programming from across the Atlantic.'

Isnt the majority of Five's programming from across the Atlantic? Just topped up with news bulletins and "World's Most Amazing Bridges"?

I'm just waiting for Film Four...

Also, whats interesting here, is Five are using 2 Top Up TV channel spaces...dont they only have 4.5 spaces in the first place?

Do enough people watch channel five to necessitate two more digital channels?

I mean look at ITV, all ITV 2, 3 and 4 serve as is a repeats service with crap US sitcoms sandwiched in the spaces they have left.

I'm looking forward to film four though, Just hope that they don't split up the movies with adverts like ITV, FIVE and Channel 4 do

one of the reasons Channel five shows the programs you're both moaning about is that a large part of its (terrestrial) remit was originally for 'educational' programming in the same way C4s was for 'alternative' programming so they are essentally pulling a fast one with things like 'World's Most Amazing Bridges' and all the 'porn documentaries' because they can pass them off as this 'educational' programming.

(anyway i'm an engineer to trade and 'World's Most Amazing Bridges' sounds like something i might actually look at

The channels will be funded by a "substantial additional investment" from the broadcaster's parent company RTL.

i don't know how much of Top Up TV has been butchered for this because i only tune my box for the 'free to view' channels and so couldn't even say how many channels i can't get, if you follow me.

i agree, all the ITVs are crap (except possibly for sport)
but then i had abandoned ITV even before i got freeview.

i've actully watched more of five than ITV in recent years and it has aired some ok stuff
(some good films, CSI, Law & Order, Star Trek: Voyager, Stargate Atlantis, House and other stuff in that vein)

and Film Four will have ads,
that was already posted (it's how they intend to make money off it after all) as i said then i don't mind that so much as long as they hold to C4s old policy of never cutting any and still have the quality seasons i've been seeing ads for up until now.

Freeview pisses me off. I only have it for the better picture I get and E4...nothing else it offers appeals to me.

Not so, itv 2 seem to show several things such as Supernatural before regular itv do, I dont pay much attention to itv 3 but itv 4 is heavy on cult programing such as Monkey, Space 1999 & Planet of the Apes so that's very usefull, it also makes me wonder if thats the channel thatll show the new Saiyuki (if it keeps that name, think its the one theyre using in Jpaan atm, may get renamed here though) over here? theres no word yet on what channel its gonna be on.

I watch those things as well, Big Stuff was always a good one, though admittidly when UK TV History has a Fred Dibnah day on theres usually enough there to make 5 redundant for these things.

I'll dispute the crap remark for itv 4 & its cult programs & dispute the sport comment as well as they intterupt live races for adverts, the ba**ards, I demand they put adverts into live world cup match coverage every 10 - 15 minutes to make up for it.

With the amount of shows 5 imports almost all the other channels are rendered almost useless most of the time, its only 4 that puts up any fight for imported stuff now.

actually, now that you mention it, i've totally started watching Monkey (again

) in recent months,
so i guess i do watch a little ITV (it's just that though, honest guv, i ain't got no problem)

and Fred is the business, if you like the heavy stuff

As much as I would love to pretend I hate imported shows, it is true that a large proportion of British TV is fairly crap in comparison.

the new Doctor Who was alright but the new series is crap (imo), and i really don't like most of the British comedy output just now (except Peter Kay stuff and Still Game) but i get the feeling that's because i'm getting old

i don't watch that much drama and there are no series that i really follow as such (except The West Wing), so some of the American shows i've mentioned (which are self contained within a single episode) are a good watch for me.

reality TV, game and talent shows do my head in to be honest so the pickings are actually quite thin on most channels at the moment

on the factual side (which is the stuff i really like) we still do the best stuff by far though.

Same here, Since the world cup started this must be the most TV i've watched since...erm Euro 2004?

I don't usually watch any TV in the week, I'll just flick over to Sky Sports News now and again on a Saturday afternoon and maybe catch football focus before that. I have to watch Dr. Who coz the GF is mad on it. That's about it really.
