I Think My Girlfriend's Computer Is In Trouble

Post by S. Thompson »

My girlfriend has a laptop and her screen has gone from dim, to pink-hued, to completely black in the past week and a half or so.

Anyone know if this would simply be the ribbon cable connecting the monitor to the hardware or could it be the screen itself...

Either way, I'm worried this won't be cheap to fix.

it sounds like its just the cable coming loose. if it's not covered under warrenty, i would definatly check that. my sisters dell laptop had this problem, but they fixed it under warrenty.

A pink hue is almost always indicative of a dying backlight and in your gf's case sounds like it's already burnt out. Dell might have a replacement program available but if not it's a pretty simple swap once you track down a spare.

Or it could be a dead inverter board -- that is much more common than dead backlight (when backlight "dies" it is more than likely the inverter board that goes).

Best of luck

IF you're out of warranty, then the easiest and most advisable way to fix it (provided you have the funds) is to just buy a new machine.

that, and sell the laptop as an ultra thin desktop pc. i have one that has a broken screen set up in my parents room right now, i just have it connected to the video out.

or, if it's a decentlaptop, buy an lcd screen and just set it on top of the laptop...

i had a similar problem... my bro dropped my laptop on the floor.
as a result, the lcd screen split showing no picture, but the backlight was working.

i ended up buying a replacement lcd screen on ebay, but it doesn't work :(
i'm too lazy to figure out what went wrong... inverter board, etc.

it's now a "ultra thin desktop" pc.
