Nintendo Wii will come with Opera browser
By Derek Sooman, TechSpot.com

Nintendo's next-generation games console Wii (formerly known as "Revolution") will come with the Opera web browser, it has been revealed. This will give users of the Wii the ability to surf the Net, and they will be able to navigate sites via the new Wii remote controller.

"For our Wii console launch in 2006, we required a browser that was fast and secure, with support for the latest standards, including AJAX," said Genyo Takeda, senior managing director and general manager of Nintendo's Integrated Research & Development Division.
Wii is expected to hit the stores at the end of this year.

Didn't they announce an Opera cart for the DS also?

Will it be able to filter out Wii-related threads from a certain Off Topic forum? Because that would be a great feature.

This is great how? That's what a computer is for. So basically, having a web browser in my enterainment center -- which is all of 75 feet from a computer -- is a plus? Sure, it's not a negative, but what the hell is the point?

I'm sure the only reason it's bundled in is because they already have it for the DS.

Opera is my favorite browser. Ever.

I've never been able to migrate from Safari, though.

I remember when I was in high school and our computer broke, we got stuck using my Dreamcast web browser as our source for an internet connection for around a year. Horrid.

I love opera, in fact that's what I'm using now. FF was good, but it was too anal about plugins and updates.

I needs AJAX support... but question is, what's AJAX?
Also, does Firefox support it?

AJAX is a dodgy acronym. Basically, it's just the ability to make requests to a webserver from JavaScript, retrieve a document (usually XML or HTML) and do something with it (either display it, or pull information out of it and display that). It allows you to write applications that can communicate with a web server without needing to constantly reload the page. Stuff like Gmail and Google Maps runs on it.

With a broadband adapter, a keyboard, and a mouse, it's not so bad.

No, it's not bad, but for the price of a BBA, keyboard, mouse and legal PlanetWeb 3.0 browser, plus the price of the 'Cast, you're sitting at about $200 (if you're lucky). For that price, you can probably snag an old P4 setup, which would do the job much better.

I mean it's a cool feature -- on both DC and now the Wii -- but it's ultimately pretty useless, considering almost 100% of the people purchasing a Wii will already have internet access. Of course, it can work in a pinch, but I don't think it's anything to go bananas or sell the system over.

Now, if they allow for saves/portals/special features to be downloaded or accessed through the web for Wii, that'd be pretty neat. Then again, a system like Xbox Live does most of that already (and some other stuff), so I don't know if that's practical.

I agree with Nick. Opera would be convenient on DS, since you could easily browse on the go, but I'd rather use a computer at home.
