The first independent figures regarding the launch performance of the Xbox 360 in North America have been released by the NPD Group, revealing that 325,902 consoles were sold by the end of November.
Shortages of the hardware at retail have held back Microsoft's console sales, which lag behind the early performance of the original Xbox - which sold 556,000 units in a comparable amount of time after launch back in 2001, despite direct competition from Nintendo's GameCube, launched only three days later.
Xbox 360 only sells 58% as well as original Xbox did

Microsoft is going to release enough consoles to keep the public interested. Its human nature to want what they cant have, sales will be consistant for the consoles as they are pumped out of the factories and put on the shelves to be snapped up by consumers just at a slower rate for the time being.
Wich really is a smart move to have a conservative stance on hardware production considering the 360 still has to compete with the previous generation of consoles in hardware and software sales. The strategy is to slowly build up a solid user base and get the 3rd party publishers to really start taking notice and in turn start making more games. Once the software base is up, Microsoft can be more confident with its hardware production.

I wonder why......
Xbox was a lot more powerful than the PS2, it came out a long time after - 10 Hype Points
Xbox had Halo - 10234.5 Hype Points
The Xbox 360 has....Perfect Dark (meh) and PGR3 (Nothing that new) - 1 Hype Point (For Perfect Dark)
The Xbox 360 has even more Ghz and Hz and THREE flux capacitors. But its the first next gen console out so everyone is waiting, for Sony
I can't say im suprised really

Well, everyong is screaming "Tehy have know stockz!!!!" "HOw can u sell wat u dont hav? LOL!?!?!?!?!"Tall Israeli wrote:Someone call the obvious police.toastman wrote:From what I understand, they aren't selling out in Japan.
So the fact that they have a ton of 360s lying unsold in Japan is apparently not that obvious. And it may be due to the lackluster Japanese sales as to why the 360 isn't performing sales-wise like its predecessor.
Oh shit, watch out, logic coming in on your 6.

if they had, as you appear to be suggesting, shipped enough stock over there to affect supply in their primary marketplace they'd be guilty of a monumental business miscalculation and afaik they only shipped 159,000 units to Japan.toastman wrote:So the fact that they have a ton of 360s lying unsold in Japan is apparently not that obvious.
Its predecessor didn't really perform sales-wise in Japan either so blaiming the current lack of overall 360 sales (compared to its predecessor) on the Japanese situation seems to me to be a rather moot point and besides the article specifically states it's about North American sales.toastman wrote:And it may be due to the lackluster Japanese sales as to why the 360 isn't performing sales-wise like its predecessor.
I'll hit the brakes, it'll fly right by.toastman wrote:Oh crap, watch out, logic coming in on your 6.

According to this German article, Microsoft sold something between 41,817 and 62,000 units in Japan during the first two days, whilst the original Xbox sold 123,000 units during its first two days.
As Japanese stores still have plenty of stock left, it's obvious that the lack of sales are not down to a lack of supply, and confirms my initial suspicions - that Microsoft have been holding back stock to create artificial demand, and make the Xbox 360 appear more popular than it actually is.
