I recommend Starting with Civ4 or RoN. I've played a bit of CiV4 and it seems more user friendly compared to 3. RoN is just straight out kickass and the tutorial is pretty good to give you an idea on what you need to do.

If you've liked any strategy games besides the simplistic AOE and Warcraft, and could enjoy actual empire building, management of an economy, and politics, you will fall in love with any of the Civ games.

I haven't played Civ 4 yet (delays :x ) but theres never been a particularly difficult learning curve for the civ games once you've got your head around the core concepts of the series (ie militrary strength is less important than a content population etc)

Again, basing comments on previous civs as I havent played civ 4 yet:

Various types of government allow certain styles of gameplay easier than others. A military specialised government (although 'fixed' governments have apparently been removed in favour of Alpha Centuari style 'mix and match' for civ 4) will allow you to spam military units across the planet and conquer other cities without suffering riots in all your home cities - plus if thats how you know youre going to play, you focus on technolgies and buildings to keep your citizens happy (or obedient - some governments let you reduce unhappy citizens just by filling your citys full of troops to keep the peace  ) while you're off waging war.

But military conquest is just one of the ways you can win the game.

You can also tech rush, because the first civilisation to create a spaceship capable of colonising Alpha Centauri wins the game, and thats almost always the highest teched country.

Or you can concentrate entirely on diplomatic channels because whoever gets voted supreme leader of the UN wins the game, and being a valuable trade partner without starting wars for the hell of it or whatever means other countires are more likely to vote for you.

Or you can concentrate on just making your cities the nicest possible cities to live in on the planet, because if you have a high cultural value, then enemy cities will just rebel from their current governments and join yours, so you can win by just being such an awesome benevolent ruler that every other country in the world wants to join your empire without any conquest involved.

Or you can win the game if you have the most legendary city in the world (based on cultural points) so you can just focus on making the flashiest city ever made, with every wonder in the world all right there in your captial. The new religious stuff theyve added presumably makes this kind of victory a little more rewarding, in founding every major religion on the planet in one city as well as having every wonder.

The civ series rocks for its sheer open-endedness of gamestyle. Its a genuine game of strategy, as opposed to most so-called RTS games where the only strategy available is who am I going to kill, and how quickly Im going to do it - entirely pacifistic tech+base level up strategys are equally as viable as unit buildup+ rush strategys.

EDIT:
Probably the best way to think of the civ series if you havent played them is to think of it as a board game mixing Risk, Monopoly and chess together - the bits that dont interest you can entirely be ignored for the bits that do.

Comparing to AOE3 (I can only compare to the demo version of AOE because as I said in a different topic - whats the point in buying AOE3 when Civ4 is out?) is wrong, because AOE3 is a standard RTS, with civ style elements (home cities, token nods to a trade + diplomacy system).

Civ is civ, the whole kaboodle.

Holy crap this game is awesome.

+ Sid Meier himself does the tutorial - "Hi there, I'm Sid Meier, you may remember me from such games as 'technology advisor in civilisation 1 through 3' and 'random pirate head number 3 in Pirates' :guffaw:

+ you can actually play an entire multiplayer game in a reasonable timespan (<3 hours)

+ multiplayer out of the box, no expansions needed

+ streamlined interface for noobies, more depths than ever hidden away for veterans

+ random song quotes stuck into various diplomatic messages (a Pleased Hatshepsut messaged me to tell me "Did you ever know that you're my hero? You're everything I ever wanted to be" :guffaw:

+ Just... one.... more... turn...

+ Religion is cool. I founded Islam in New York.
Plus its been implemented in such a gloriously cynical fashion; all religions are identical in all but name, and they work like a virus. If a city doesnt have a religion, then it will end up catching one from a nearby city unless you take means to vaccinate it first with your own religion, or some combination of civics or buildings to prevent it catching anything you dont want. The most powerful combination of religion late game is to have every religion on the planet in every city with free religion.

+ hard borders mean that strategic 'corridors' stop people accessing cities / resources / whatever SMAC style, rather than how it was in civ 3 where cpu units would just run through your borders and there was nothing you could do about it

- it just doesnt work on radeon cards without using a development tool to unpack the graphics resources

- it uses evil securom copy protection (always claims it cant find disk in drive if you have alcohol, nero or daemon tools installed) so you have to go get less-than-legal programs to disable securom even with the original disk

all in all - best civ ever, which automatically makes it a strong contender for best game ever!

I'm just happy it works for me. My system is below the requirements but it still works.
You can also tech rush, because the first civilisation to create a spaceship capable of colonising Alpha Centauri wins the game, and thats almost always the highest teched country.
The Russians are about to build a spaceship in my game, those bastards
Fuck you, the dark patriot

Also now the UN is useful. You can build up massive sets of icbms and then pass the no nukes treaty before anyone gets a chance and then nukem back to the stone age. God i love civ.
