I need a Pentium 4 emulator or tricker for AthlonXP machine
I'm running Win98 SE on an AthlonXP machine, but a certain program has a built-in check that it won't install on an Athlon machine, only if it detects a Pentium processor!
This program was made before even the good ol' Athlon was released,so it was a measure to prevent installing on systems with AMD K6 processors.
But,since Athlon and AthlonXP came out, they are 100% compatible with P4 and can run the same programs equally good, without bugs.
But this software hasn't updated. Now,the question is,how to trick the program/OS to think I have a Pentium 3 or 4 and install this program?
Please help!

Bochs may or may not do what you are looking for: http://bochs.sourceforge.net/ the drawback is you would need to install windows on it ...

Uh.. if the program REQUIRES SSE2 or SSE3 it's not going to work.nakamichi wrote:I'm running Win98 SE on an AthlonXP machine, but a certain program has a built-in check that it won't install on an Athlon machine, only if it detects a Pentium processor!

Hmmm...would I be able to use sound output if I use this? (VMWare emulates a simple soundblaster-compatible soundcard)....because if there's no sound,it means nothing to me.This program is a sound app.
QEmu is only for Linux? Is there a Windows port?
BOCHS is too slow,it cannot be compared to VMWare, which I use,but doesn't give me the option to "mimic" a Pentium 4 CPU on an AthlonXP...
Will BOCHS or any similar emu give performance equal to a Pentium III at 600-700 MHz and Directsound on an overclocked AthlonXP2200+?
VMWare is so fast, but it's not exactly what I need for this.

Just tried that BOCHS emu and I must say that it's no more than a big box full of cockroaches for now. It's so buggy,I can't even install Win98SE from a CD at all. :( Two bad bugs happen on my machine with the latest version that prevent me to install Win98:
1. If you boot from a Win98 startup disk without CDROM support,it works fine, but I don't need that mode, because I need to install it from a CD.If I choose to load with CDROM support enabled, after it has finished loading the data from the floppy, the virtual HDD starts spinning infinitely, eating 100% CPU usage, and that's all.
2. If you ever manage to DOS-format a virtual Hard Drive with FDisk, and this bug occurs, you'll NEVER be able to format another virtual disk again by using this method.Create and delete any virtual disks you want,it cannot be fixed.
3. If you use the utility to create an image of your floppy disk,it always gives a fatal exception and the program closes.Duh!
When you compare this and VMWare Workstation,VMWare turns out being perfect - haven't found one single bug so far in this program.Just a shame it does not "imitate" something like a P2/3/4 CPU on an AMD machine.
I use VMWare for testing risky beta software that can damage your OS or trying out a potentially hazardous virus infected file, before I ever install it on my real OS...and also testing whether I like a certain app before ever installing it...or for testing your freshly-made nLite-d XP installations,to see if you removed something you should not :)
Any other good program besides BOCHS that can do the same thing BOCHS does?
