Flash-based Websites

Post by Ender » Fri May 27, 2005 11:39 pm

I'm designing a website for a project that I'll call secret for the time being, but am running into a few design snags. One of these snags is making me consider something I personally loath...making a flash-based site. So, what do you think? Are flash sites good, bad, or are you indifferent?

I use Linux, and our flash plugin sucks. There's about a 1 second lag between sound and video that makes watching anything unbearable because it doesn't compensate for the fact that I have software mixing.

I hate flash sites with a passion. Flash is okay for content (when appropriate), but if a site uses it for navigation I usually just leave.

What's the snag? There's a good chance it's a sign that you should reconsider your design, rather than "fix" it with flash.

It isn't so much "fix" as try to find a way to get what I want to happen. Sorry about the secrecy. All will be revealed in a few weeks (no it doesn't have anything to do with DC)

I just kind of need something to do certain tasks a certain way. I may have found a way to do it with HTML, so we'll see. Like I said, I hate flash as well. If a lot of people here said that they liked it, I may have considered using it.

Flash sites can look great indeed. I remember seeing one of a dutch dance event, Qlimax, last year, and it was awesome. But unfortunately my computer (K6@350mHz, 288mbram) is too slow to display things smoothly even on low quality, so I still prefer a 'normal' site.

A normal website done in Flash can be very functional, very pretty to look at and very easy to use.
The problem is, people don't use Flash to make normal websites, and completely overuse it by making pointless introductions, animated menus that take 10 minutes to appear, adding 32kbps looping mp3s to everything, adding dumb sound effects to every clickable object and generally making everything twizzle, twist, flip, rotate, flash, sparkle and wobble continously making it impossible to concentrate on what you want to read.

I don't hate Flash, just the people who overuse it.

Some of the Professionally designed flash websites are pretty cool, but for the most part, I hate flash sites. Most people's designs end up looking cheap, and like boneycork (<3) said, a lot of little things get overused.

Stick with regular html.

Flash is the path to the dark side. Flash leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering. The way of the Jedi, HTML+CSS is!

(I'm a padawan, haven't learned to use CSS properly yet :P)

one of the best looking sites on the web i know is almost toally flash (http://www.tokyoplastic.com) on the whole though flash is mainly used to render a site unusable and difficult to navigate. avoid like the plague on a content based site.

What's the point of a site but for content? :P

Tokyoplastic: Yes, it's very nice-looking. But the flash interface, while not as bad as some, exhibits all the qualities of flash interfaces that are bad. Like on the first page -- you click on the flower? There's no hint that it's a button, other than the cursor changing over it, and there's no clue given as to what clicking on it will do. Then there's the useless "enter site" button, and another completely useless button after that to continue the splash animation before you get to the interface.

And what about the interface? At least these links do open up a little text to tell you what they're actually going to do (but all the buttons look the same, which is textbook bad design), and the text is completely dissociated from the buttons.

I click on the gallery link, and there's another completely pointless interstitial click before I get to the actual gallery.

With the workshop link, there's actually two interstitial clicks before you get to the gallery. And there, I clicked through the gallery, clicking the "next" button, and when I got to the end, instead of graying out or telling me I was at the end in any way, the last click sent me back to the main menu.

...

What I meant to say is, flash = bad. No matter how pretty it is, it doesn't cover up bad UI. And for some reason, it seems to encourage bad UI.
I'm a lone wolf looking for trouble.

I hate flash sites, they are annoying. Why should I have to install a plug-in to view a web site anyway?
