lookin into gettin a GP32

Post by Nico0020 »

Since I dont know much about it, but ive read a lot of cool stuff. Can anyone reccomend a good place to get one of these things, also are many of the games playable with a low language barrier? Just kinda curious about these things, they look pretty cool.

I ordered mine from GBAX.com and it arrived without problems. Probably a bit inconvenient for you (they're in the UK), but consider them recommended.

The professionally made games aren't really the reason you want a GP32 - it's the homebrew that make it such a great machine. SmashGP springs to mind, but gbax have also run coding competitions (another one just started) and some killer applications have come out of it. Take a look at their website. http://www.gp32x.com is also good for GP32 information.

Failing that, ask Scherzo :)

I think http://www.play-asia.com and http://www.lik-sang.com are out of stock currently, which means that http://www.gbax.com is the only place left where you can get it.

Anyway, it's worth the money for sure. :) And don't be afraid of a language barrier, the main menu and documentation is available in English as well.

yea i was pretty much lookin at the emus and the homebrew scene. wow i didnt realize there was this much goin on. If i buy one of these from gbax.com should i go ahead and get the top notch version with 166MHZ? What benefits will i get if I get one with 166. i dont really even understand what it does, lol. are there some emus and homebrew games that will only run on that one? also, link play is wireless correct? can emulated games or ports like doom be played over this with a friend?

Some of the hardest emulators run best at the higher clock speeds. I don't think anything doesn't work on the lower clock speeds, but you'd have to turn off sound or increase the frameskip in some cases. Link play is wireless, but you need to buy the wireless multiplayer dongle. There are some homebrew applications that use it, but I can't remember off the top of my head :(

Meh, I dunno. $222? You might as well get a PSP. It can play DivX and all that crap and I'm sure some emulators will come out for it sooner or later.

i regret purchasing one.

its media format SUCKS (have to totally format the card to regain space), the software felt clunky (however i'll admit i haven't used the thing in over a year, so it might have gotten a lot better). which is another: HAVING to use special software for something like that = boourns.

save up some more cash and get a DS w/ a few games or a psp.

The GP32 was cool but I think its too outdated for the price now. Skip it and get a DS or even a PSP.
It's thinking...

I actully wanted to, untill i have seen the pathetic lineup of games that have been released.

I wont be gettin one soon as Im still having to save up for a new car and school. Sucks too cause there is so much stuff i need....um....er....want to buy. But the GP32 will have to wait.

Gp32 is still awesome. It much cheaper than you'd think, seeing as you dont pay for homebrew games/emus...
Very ergonomic design, fits nicely into my hands...
Hell, $200 for a gp32, $20 per 128MB smc, $30 for rechargable batteries and charger...
You'll prolly only pay $250-300 total depending on how many smc you need to get.. And thats it...
Much cheaper that Psp or ds with a few games... Compared to a psp with 10 or so games, it is insanely cheap...
You can have a dozen systems in your pocket.
your childhood memories on a Smc...
Pure retro gaming bliss....
Thousands and thousands of games to play...
No other Portable can currently do this, and even if psp does get cracked and gets emulators, it wont happen for a long while...

Fullspeed w/ sound emulated systems
Genesis
Sms
Gamegear
Gameboy colour
C64
Spectrum
And more that i dont personally use...

Atari St is emulated quite well
Snes is about fullspeed without sound
Lynx is emulated well...
We have a Mame port that runs over 500 games, most quite well...
More systems emulated that i dont use too...

Some nice homebrew..
Smashgp
Lacuna
Druken frogger
Bolkxian
Drunken arcade master
Kof 91
Electronia
More that i cant remeber right now...

Some nice ports
Beats of Rage
Doom 1&2
Quake
SCUMM interperator...

Plus you can use it as an mp3/ogg player...
You can watch movies...
Read stuff...

I do not regret buying mine!
I dont see why you wouldnt want to get one... If you are a fan of retro gaming at all...

Check http://www.gp32x.com for more info...

are the GP to DC cables still available?
more importantly, can anything be done with them?
