Cheap Computers?

Post by hearld500 » Sun Jan 09, 2005 5:06 pm

My buddy wants to get a desktop computer, but he only has about $400 to spend. He won't be doing a lot of gaming, so graphics aren't really a big deal. He is going to need everything, mouse, keyboard, speakers, moniter, etc.

Any recommendations?

watch your local sunday papers from places like Circuit City, Best Buy, Offices Max, Office Depot, etc. They all the time have them pretty cheap. Of course you have to have some money to put up front for the rebates.

It really depends on the system. Sometimes its not that much cheaper, but the parts will be better quality and you have the option of dual channel etc etc

What about a low end XP, a motherboard with everything (Including video), then 256/512 RAM

Thats a heck of a deal, but there's not a circiut city for hundreds of miles of here. The reviews for it were interesting....about 1/2 were excellent, and the other half said it was poor quality.

Thought this was funny though:
There isn't another computer out there that comes even close to the perfomance this baby gives. I am a gamer so i know what i'm talking about. Doom 3 runs better than anything i've ever seen. Highly Recommend!!!

It says free shipping for orders over 25$. But yeah. My dad has that system. He uses it for web and email. It works pretty well I never ran into any problems when I used it.

If he can get used to Linux, I'd go with one of those that Roofus linked to, or else go for that one that SuperMegatron linked to and then install Linux on it. Most of the popular Linux distributions have all the software you'll need to get online, do word processing, etc. Pick up a used monitor from Goodwill or wherever, and you're all set.

Actually, I could just go without a OS, since it would be cheaper. I can get XP home, XP pro, 98, 95, or NT installed at school for free. :P

Get a used system. Check the classifieds in your paper. I've seen complete P3 systems for under $300.
