When I was 16 I worked at a local Burger King. The manager was working register 2 and I was on 1. A guy tried to pay for something that had a penny from canada and she wouldn't accept it saying it wasn't worth as much as a U.S. penny. I thought it was stupid myself, but I guess legally your not supposed to without converting it.

Most cash registers have a US Funds feature, so it will actually calculate what they really owe you after exchanges, and you won't lose money.SuperMegatron wrote:I was thinking of going to canada but I dont want to switch my money over do they take the us dollars there and just charge a exchange fee like mexico or do you have to use Canadian money up there

It depends on where you are going. Like ace said a lot o places will let you pay in American dollars and the cash registers will convert if for you can give you and canadian change. It was like this in Whistler, B.C. and every store I went to took USD, but I'm guessing it probably isn't so common in smaller cities or non-major stores.

If you have a credit card (or a check card with a visa or MC logo), I'd say just use it. At the place of purchase, it will go thru as Canadian dollars, but then the bank that issued your card will do the exchange to US dollars at the time the transaction is logged, so you avoid being screwed by the merchant (concerning exchange rates) and don't have to worry about getting cash exchanged (although having some on hand is still a good idea).

How does that exchange thing work exactly if the dollar is worth more then the canadian dollar I am better off doing my shopping in canada and bringing it back to the states rightMrSiggler wrote:The Canadian dollar is worth about 75-80 cents USD.
I'm sure you'll be able to use your money here.
Infact, i'm sure places would love you to use those american dollars.
Why? Because if you pay dollar for dollar, the place makes a nice 25% profit
It isn't nearly as true as it used to be, but I used to live about an hour from the border in Michigan, and people often jumped the border for major purchases to save money. You ended up saving money on some things because of the better exchange rate.FETUS wrote:not really if it costs $80 in the us then it will probably be $100 canadian if thats the current exchange rate.

Yeah, I used to abuse the exchange rate often for expensive DVD boxed sets not all that long ago.
But now that the USD is tanking at a much faster rate than the CAD, it's not really worthwhile anymore.

With the Canadian exchange rate as high as it is, it's actually better to buy in the states for now. In fact, some Canadians are going to shop in the states.
Me? I'm dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest... Honestly. It's the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they're going to do something incredibly...stupid.

I've never run across a store in Canada that didn't take US money. That said, you will get a marginally better exchange rate if you change it at the bank, but unless you're spening large amounts of money, I dunno if it's worth bothering to find a bank to change it at.
Although, right now, with how the US dollar is dropping, buying canadian money when you get here, and then buying american money when you leave might actually make you some money
