What do you have against WMP9?
Aside from the usual crap that gets included with each new iteration of WMP (like the thing getting bigger, using more resources, looking even uglier than before) this one also has a lot of DRM crap included with it. And it acts as a giant advertisment for any on-line music stores Microsoft choose to bless (which sounds like abusing their monopoly again)

Fair enough, but it doesn't seem like a good reason to not install the SP.

Windows Media Player doesn't have to be a part of the OS. I haven't used it in months, and I have yet to see any evidence that it still exists on my computer, other than the link in the Start Menu. I don't see why you simply can't ignore it and use an alternative media player in it's place.

A slipstream is basically when you install the service pack onto the installation CD-ROM, so when you install the OS from the CD it already has the service pack built in.

Here is how:

I officially love DX9c. In UT2k4, it appears to have taken me from 20-30fps to 35-45fps. That's great :D

Basically, it saves you from having to install the service packs (and any patches that you've put on the CD too) after you've installed the OS itself. In the case of Windows XP, that could be the difference between getting infected with huge piles of viruses, or not.

Because default settings have it run in the background and monitor your PC for any media changes
That and the the last time I had it installed, it wormed its way into the context menu for media files with no easy option of removal. It wouldn't have been too bad had it not associated itself with *everything* despite me specifically trying to associate those files with winamp.

On a side note, file associations in general are totally broken in XP. It is impossible to completely customise them they way you were able to in windows 98, for example. :?

Which version of Knoppix have you tested with?
I have Knoppix 3.4 build 17-05-2004.
Test with THAT build and tell me if it works.
And,I have an AMD CPU,not Intel :)

And,by the way, does Knoppix make any configuration files and save them to your hard drive?
The first time I ran Knoppix off the CD,I was able to run it at 1024x768 resolution at 100Hz.My sound card was detected, but not activated/installed.

Then, when I switched to Windows XP,my screen refresh went to 60Hz (from 100Hz,as it was before),and the drivers for my monitor have gone! :)

(It happened like this...I had a faulty mouse, and ran Knoppix. The mouse pointer froze, and I had to reset my PC with the hard reset button)
That's how all of that crap happened.

About the Windows Media Player: I hate it,I don't use it at all.
Winamp SUX for video. For audio it's not bad,so I keep it.
The best player is the open-source Media Player Classic which comes with the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 1.03.

The WMP9 is easy to get rid of,just use the program XPLite and uninstall it completely. It's a snap :)

If you thought WMP9 was bad, wait until the final version of WMP10 is officially released. Then you'll experience what's pure terror like :)
So much adware, spyware and loads of unneeded trash,it will make your Windows choke. When you listen to music or surf the web,it will spam you with all kinds of unneeded trash: Buy this, see what's hot, more music to buy from this artist,blah,blah,...it will track everything you listen to and it will say: Aaaa,so you like Castlevania, don't you? I can tell by just looking at your eyes"

I haven't tested with any version of Knoppix. I'm using Gentoo. Gentoo required no config besides checking off the kernel driver in ALSA, so if Knoppix has the kernel driver set then it should work, AFAIK.

A small note for those of you that use the ZN1/2 Sys 11 emu Zinc if you have a newer AMD processor (Athlon64/Opteron/Sempron, maybe some newer Athlon XPs) then it will probably crash a fair bit under sp2, theres a thread about it here on the zinc boards, this has been a public service announcement brought to you by me
