Just bought Doom 3.
Darc and I took a trip to the mall this morning and picked it up. And.. wow.
I am not all too far into the game yet, but it's very impressive so far. The graphics, scripted events, and the horror of entering a dark room with your flashlight while hearing moans and scratching, all add to the fact that you will walk away from this game within the first 15 minutes of playtime.
If you thought RE was spooky, don't touch this.
I just paid $55 for a game I'm too scared to play

I just tried it, it seems it just makes the single player maps available through Deathmatch. It's a quick-and-dirty way of doing it, and to the game panels (tabbing to see stats, etc) its Deathmatch, but the events, etc. should all work fine.|darc| wrote:Jeeba and I are about to play coop.AmadeusZull wrote:just installed and even the install screens gave me chills. i'm such a pussy with these games. can't wait for the co-op mod.

On the coop mod? I only ran it by myself on my own server with no people joining, to test it out, so I have no idea.AmadeusZull wrote:whoa that was fast. um how is the lag if any?
Some bugs are going to have to be ironed out, of course. For example, I picked up a PDA and it opened the PDA screen because this was my first PDA and it wouldn't let me out (tab was opening the deathmatch stats screen, not closing the PDA).

I get the feeling that this is going to be nothing like the other Doom games, and more like a completely independant FPS with the same name.

It is a lot like the Doom games, just not the action. You still start and end every level going through an airlock. You still have to find keys to progress. The weapons are the same. The enemies are the same. It's obviously a Doom game, though it has become much different because technology allows id to do the game as it was originally invisioned.az_bont wrote:I get the feeling that this is going to be nothing like the other Doom games, and more like a completely independant FPS with the same name.

I think you can use the Esc key to get off the PDA, as well.|darc| wrote:On the coop mod? I only ran it by myself on my own server with no people joining, to test it out, so I have no idea.AmadeusZull wrote:whoa that was fast. um how is the lag if any?

I can't wait for the Xbox version either. I think im gonna have to play it with my GF though! She likes scary games and I have a feeling i'm gonna need some arms to whimper in when I jump like a bltch. Especially with the fibre optic sound I got hooked up to the 'box shit's gonna make me jump. My body's confused weather it's scared or excited..
Damn release dates..

I just got home from work with my copy (damn peer pressure). I'm installing it as we speak. I'll comment tomorrow.
*EDIT: I played about an hour, and so far I'm impressed. Of course I was going to be blown away by the visuals, and even on medium setting, the game did not cease to amaze me. I found myself dropping my jaw about every 3 minutes at something that just looked gorgeous (in a hideous way).
As for the game itself, it plays more like Quake 2 than a Doom game. Between mission objectives, the mechanical corridors and devices, and even the enemies themselves, I found myself constantly thinking I was playing Quake 2. Of course, this isn't bad since Quake 2 was a great game in it's day. But as a Doom game, I miss the pentagrams, the demonic landscapes, and the overall sense of being in hell. This feels like I'm in a industrial facility that's going through hell.
In the end, from my short time playing it, I feel as if they should have put the title Quake 4 on this thing instead of Doom, as it feels to me like a sequel of Quake 2. A satisfying game as is, but so far it feels distant from it's roots. Hopefully a few more hours in will reveal a closer relation to it's roots.
