Beta Max is Sony's own video format, like VHS. It was released a little earlier, and many people claimed it to be vastly superior, but it actually wasn't. Due to a number of different reasons it drifted into obscurity over a god ten years ago, maybe a bit more.

Beta is the one right in front of the VHS tape.

Beta was the 'other' home recording format that triggered a huge lawsuit from the MPAA, and only resulted in the Home Recording Act, only then to lose the war to VHS.

You've probably seen people talking about the many many DVD recordable formats, and how you don't want to be stuck with 'the beta of DVD recorders.'

The decks themselves were mostly top-loading, like my first VHS VCR, in fact. I don't think I've ever even seen a beta deck that wasn't toploading with my own eyes.

People still claim it to be better, and it was/is technologically superior. Picture was/is better, as was/is sound. It's still in use at various TV stations.
