Dunno if you'll be able to get one that can play MP3 CDs for $40.

The Panasonic SL-SX420 plays MP3s and audio CDs. It also supports CD-Rs and CD-RWs, all for $50. I have one and I like it.

get a mini cd player that supports mp3s. They still hold a good few hours of music, but they dont look like, or weigh as much as a discus.

Don't get mini-disc, they're expensive and so are the discs.
Just get a cheap mp3 player so you can burn MP3 cds that are VERY cheap, you can still play your old cds, and you can share cds with frieneds. :)

true, but all mp3 players appear to have rubbish battery life whereas minidiscs can last upto something like 60 hours.

Minidisc players are cool, I love mine, got a lot better battery life than any portable CD player. They are a lot smaller too.

Whatever you do don't get a RioVolt SP150... The sound quality is horrible... not as good as my Sony Walkman that doesn't play MP3's... I was so disappointed by that... that I went back to my regular walkman and kept burning Audio CD's.

Dont bother with mini-disc.

Cheap portable cd players today will last at least 10 hours with anti-shock on. While this is nothing compared to mini discs, a pair of AA rechargable batteries will set you back next to nothing, and most cd players have a built in recharger. Just remeber to plug it into the mains every couple of days and youll be fine.
Plus, look at the price of mini-discs. A cd-rw disc is much better value.

I have a rio I bought at BB for $75. I remebered seeing it not too long again in their ads for $35-$45 somethin along those lines. Its pretty good, it supports all birates of mp3s and VBR and even WMA files.

Ill try to find a link for you in a bit.
