Hotmail vs Gmail

Post by cube_b3 » Sat Dec 03, 2016 2:45 pm

I've been with Hotmail since I discovered the internet.
For the last decade gmail has eclipsed hotmail in popularity.
Almost a decade ago I made a formal professional email ID with gmail.
I obviously used my casual ID more but since GMAIL has a much better app for iPhone and overall their filing system is pretty good and they have labels for easy organization. Hotmail doesn't have that I am thinking of creating a new gmail ID and simply exporting my entire Inbox to it.

That said, there are things I don't like about gmail but what do you think will hotmail introduce gmail features such as labeling?

Both and then many other legacy e-mail accounts.

Have been meaning to make the switch to an encrypted e-mail address (tutanota or protonmail), but 2-step has worked out ok in the meantime.

I am already on these platforms.
I also have a Yahoo ID that I don't bother with besides Flickr.

Now whatever Proton mail is, it would be a new service and have their own way of doing things. I am not interested in that. I care about interface. I have nothing of real value to any hacker, therefore I don't care for encryptions. I care for a more pleasant UI instead.

It's email. It has a nice app, it has a mobile website.

Your attitude regarding encryption is really worrying me
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nothing ... e_argument

The whole idea behind proton mail is that it makes encryption invisible to the user, thereby making it more widespread and improving privacy of not only individuals, but the public in general.
Your argument is also quite selfish, as i might send you information that I would like to keep private. It's not your right to give away other's secrets.

Rookie mistake. You know Gmail and Yahoo are heavily monitored by the government. When your new issues of Dabiq arrive in your inbox you'll be found very quickly.

What is a Dabiq? :/

Edit: Looked it up.

Haha funny.

I am from Karachi, Pakistan.
Not Dabiq, Syria.

I rather you not send me stuff that you don't want the government reading.
That said, you also know my email has the word hotmail and gmail in it. You know these services are not encrypted.

See the way I look at privacy is on a personal level. If someone at works comes on my computer and goes through my email. I'd be like wtf. Someone in the government that I don't personally know and they don't know me doesn't effect me. How can it? Contrary to Darc's belief's I don't really have anything nefarious in my emails.

Also another thing would be credit card, bank statements, etc and things of that nature that if a hacker gets them can cause me serious financial problems but as far as I know hot and gmail both keep me safe on that front. That is what really matters. Like what am I missing? Why do I need super security that prevents the government from accessing any of my content. It's metadata collection anyways.

That made me laugh... on the inside.
But the title is Hotmail Vs Gmail.
I thought a post with this title would discuss pros and cons of each service.
That said, your playful denunciation of me. Makes me want to explore proton mail.
Can I have your user name and password so I can see how the UI is like without registering an account :P.

Go read 1984. That's how it will effect you if you sit back and let a free and open democracy that works for the people be gradually replaced with a dystopian surveillance police state full of paranoid and powerful people.

I'm not being dramatic. Can the government stick cameras in your home? How about a tracker in your vehicle? What if the police can just pick the lock on your door whenever they like and take photos of everything in your drawers?

Is that all OK to you too? It must be I guess. After all, you've got nothing to hide, and they're just strangers so you won't get any awkward moments at the dinner table. So no problem...right?

If you're not OK with it, then how is your email inbox any different? It's your things, being rifled through whenever by strangers who didn't ask and just broke in. It's the same damn thing.

Sigh... even just metadata collection can be used to paint a picture of everything you do, what your daily activities are, who you associate with, where you go, etc. All of which can be used to discriminate against you.

The more people who say "encryption is no big deal and not necessary," the more it isolates people who protect their privacy and makes it seem fringe. We have already seen legal threats against the practice of encryption itself. We are currently on a fast track to having zero privacy, with the government knowing everything you do and say, with almost absolute power over your life, with no way to fight back or prevent it.

Re: Hotmail vs Gmail

Post by cube_b3 » Thu Dec 08, 2016 12:22 am

I've read 1984.

I am concerned about my shit being stolen. I would be concerned if my shit was being inspected microscopically and it would affect my day to day living like Winston and Julia. Look, I am not against higher security, but what I would prioritize is the account can not be hacked, my password being changed by an asshole, my credit card stolen, my friends and family being trolled. Those things matter.

Our American government can't do anything even with all the information. The muslim gay dude who killed all those people in the gay bar was on the FBI hit list. He had been reported by his ex-wife. That crazy New Yorker who did some murder, bombing or stabbing I don't know was also on the FBI list reported by his own father. I don't know the point I am making here.

Don't you think they would have found something in his mail. They were monitoring it.

Right now, Eric, you are mentioning Dabiq and what not in your posts in this public forum. Honestly, I would be more embarrassed if someone discovered my decade plus history on this forum then anything in my inbox.

The way I see it, you are either exaggerating your own importance. Nobody cares about y'alls porn subscriptions.

And in the beginning of this thread somebody stated Hotmail and Gmail haven't gotten around to it, which means they will eventually get it. After moving to the states I have realized one thing, I love corporations over tiny businesses. The shit corporations do for you, you all take for granted. My cars tire temperature light was on I drove to Wallmart got the air filled for free. They are not allowed to even accept tips. I didn't even have to get out of my car. Went once to the local Mexican. Charged me 2$.

Bought some clothes from Macy's 3 month later the shirt looked a tad faded. Exchanged it for another shirt from the same manufacturer. Bought a shirt from a local T-shirt printer color came off after the first wash, cost more than Macy's faded after first wash. Spoke to the manufacturer he said, "you probably washed it in hot water". Don't do that. WTF?

So this Proton mail is a small company, which will probably go belly up as soon as Google gets encryption and THEY WILL. Note my gmail ID is not just gmail. It is YouTube, Drive, Office and more things that I may not be even aware off.

Why do you only worry about being embarrassed? It's strangers rummaging through your shit. It's a complete invasion of privacy regardless of whether they find something or not. All you seem to care about is your public standing and if anyone can get dirt on you.

If a courier left one of my Amazon deliveries with a neighbour and they opened it, they'd probably find a cooking pot, or a kids book, or a new hard drive. I'm not going to be ashamed, but I am going to be angry, because what I buy is none of their fucking business.

I spent years in China and it's a very public culture. Patients wait in the same room as the doctor so they can hear what each other has, married couples happily argue in the street, taxi drivers ask how much you earn etc. It's all normal, but bizarre to me. Maybe Pakistani culture is similar? Not very private? You just don't seem to value your privacy very much.

The east is more open than the west but China seems extreme.

If you read my last post, I may have not articulated it really well but what I was trying to say is government surveillance is over rated which is why I sited those two mental cases who were under FBI surveillance.

I'm not sure what your point is.

If you believe excessive government surveillance isn't helping counter terrorism then there is even less justification for it happening. On the flipside, the government will use their failings as a means to make things even more invasive. "We would have stopped x if only we had access to y!"

And again, you seem way to focused on the result. It doesn't matter if the government does anything with my data. i don't even care if a human being looks at it or not. It's not theirs. It's mine. They have no right to it.

I was trying to illustrate the effectiveness of those metadata collecting softwares, I am fairly certain we have crawlers crawling through our mail and internet usage rather than an actual individual.

I don't know man... This discussion is going haywire and I'm being painted as someone who is okay with our privacy being compromised.

it's like being asked on abortion or gay rights, My primary physician works at Baptist Hospital who are against abortions, I think the parents should have every right to decide, both parties male and female should get to decide if they want an abortion however I am not going to switch hospitals because Baptists are against it. I go there because I have an awesome PCP.

Here's another example. Gay people. I had gay friends in Pakistan even though it is officially illegal there. I seem to be coming across good gay friends here. But when I'm hungry I go to Chick-Fil-A. It is an awesome restaurant. I love there burgers.

This thread was about which service is better and discuss the specifics of UI. I agree that we should have the right to our privacy. But I made this thread to really discuss email user interface. So calm down and read something from Twain as Orwell is clearly getting you down.
