A friend of mine was recently looking for a decent gaming laptop (ha) around $800. He ended up choosing this:

It seems to be the current general recommendation at a number of places for "power on a budget." You pay for it in battery life, though.

Nope. No problems at all. I paid 1,000 bucks for it last Summer. It runs Call of Duty: World at War at full speed on high settings. Really nice machine.

I bought a Sager NP2098 last august for $1000. Runs fairly cool, rock solid and 3-4 hour battery life.

Believe it or not, there's now an Alienware laptop in your price range. The m11x. I hear it's pretty good for the price.

Downside is the screen isn't real high res, and it's a bit small. But, very good battery life, very portable, and pretty decent performance for $800.
