Linux Distribution for Dreamcast

Post by Christuserloeser » Thu May 10, 2007 9:32 am

Hi!

Unfortunately, I have looked EVERYWHERE for a ready-to-boot disc juggler or nero image for DCLinux. I tried the boob! website, but the downloads server has been down forever and I really want to get Linux on my dreamcast without going through a lot of fuss with "compiling" my image. Please note that I use MS Windows on the PC that I intend to burn the image on. Unfortunately, the instructions on burning the image are geared towards linux users. WHAT MADNESS! Also, why can't I find the ready-made image anywhere (including the m17n.org website which has shut down recently)? Can somebody upload the cdi to RapidShare or MegaUpload so I can nab it and be in Linux heaven on the Dreamcast? Thank you for your help!

EDIT (05/08/2007): I tried bittorrent too. No dice! I also looked m17n.org up on the Internet Archive and I thought I hit the jackpot... but the download wasn't working.

EDIT 2 (05/08/2007): The file I am looking for is dclinux.cdi and it is roughly 300 MBs or so in size. If anyone has access to the file, please upload it to RapidShare or MegaUpload and post a link to the download!

- I checked my backups as I remember having downloaded a Linux distribution a long time ago, but it turns out the .zip archive hasn't finished downloading... >_<

Someone to help us out so we could host a decent DCLinux / LinuxDC distribution at DCEvolution.net ?

I'm pretty sure that file is really old. And I mean really old even when this scene was still really alive and going. There have been new and much better versions since then.

Did DC Linux ever have a gui? I remember using it years ago but all it had was a command line.

I vaguely recall running X on it at one point, but practically nothing interesting could be run because of the limited RAM.

Ye Olde Dreamcast Files.

I think there were at least two revisions after this ?. Still, better than nothing I guess.

Hm, yeah that's likely and I doubt we should host it at DCEvo. So, if anyone has a new version we would be happy to host that. :)

Thanks, darc, Savant. We currently have a version from 2001 or 2002 hosted at DCEvo that someone at DCEmu UK found at snesorama:

I guess we will have to update our Linux page with this new version :)

Anyone got any idea what this is exactly: viewtopic.php?p=902007#p902007 - It's called 'Stage 3' I think.

Gentoo does three "stage" releases, referring to where at in the compilation process you start. Stage 1 represents compiling the most from scratch, stage 2 has some stuff precompiled, and stage 3 has nearly everything precompiled. From that post, it seems like you can download the sh4 tarball from Gentoo's site and make a selfboot with it.
