Best Way for VMU <-> PC Connection

This forum is for discussion pertaining to homebrew and indie software for the Dreamcast, such as homebrew games, emulators/interpreters, and other homebrew software/applications. Porting requests and developmental ideas are not to be made here; you can make those here. If you need any help burning discs for homebrew software, this is the place to ask as well.

Best Way for VMU <-> PC Connection

Post by nz17 »

Okay, so right now I am looking for a way to get my save files from my VMS/VMU to my Dreamcast. Now I can't use the "modem way" (as creating a modem to modem bridge is a pain and I don't have dialup access). So now I am looking for one of the direct methods that doesn't require a BBA.

Skillz Memory Card with Cable - $6

Double Power (incl. cable) - $20

DC Coders Cable (using VMU Tool) - $20

Now all three of these solutions will be the save data to and fro my computer. But the question is which to get? The first is nice because it includes a memory card and is cheap, but requires me to run Windows software and transfer files to the card each time. The second is nice because I can use practically any memory card with it and thus not need to transfer my files to a special card first; however it still seems to need its own special (Windows-based) software. The third is nice because I can use any memory card and transfer the files using the excellent VMU Tool program (which is open-source and cross-platform) and I plan to do some Dreamcast programming soon anyway; however VMU Tool requires the Dreamcast to be nearby, powered-on, and connected to the PC to work whereas the other methods only require the VMU/memory card to be available.

So I ask you, my fellow DC followers, which would be the best to choose from this list? Should I save up my money and get all three? Or is one of the above better than the rest?

I dunno. If you just wanna put savefiles from other people from the internet onto it, just burn VMU Tool from http://www.dcevolution.net under Images Hosted By Us or whatever. Then Download it and burn it. It has some saves on it. Then you can make a savegame disk and use it to put files on your vmu from other saves also. now making a backup on pc, i have NO idea.

For backing up just use VMU tool and a coders cable. Why pay 20 bucks, just make your own. heck, theres tons of diagrams out there.
