WOW! Great, Troy.
But RAW/SDL wasn't canceled due to owner request?

You're pretty fast eh?
Thanks.

It was, but Eric Chahi, the person who wrote the game, gave permission for the complete game datafiles to be released for the GP32 and Dreamcast versions of raw only.

It was renamed to "Out of This World" due to Interplay wanting to avoid confusion and possible a trademark violation with the "Another World" tv show in the US.

well im impressed.. i have a question though.. i noticed there isnt any music.. yes theres sound but no music.. is that something that was taken out for this release and was it taken out to make it full speed?

also i wanted to ask a question about a dummy file.. i noticed that when i burned the game the full file was only a few MB... is there a program that will selfboot and DUMMY the file for me? and is that even necessary? usually i dont worry about dummy files because usually i just burn emulators and such and once the dc loads the rom thats it.. but im a little worried that using a game like this might cause damage to the dreamcast without a dummy file. any advise on should i use a dummy file and how exactly can i do that? please keep it simple as i dont want my head to explode.. thanks

and again.. what a great addition to the dreamcast scene.

one more thing.. when i burn using disc juggler should i use RAW write or not.. and what exactly is raw write and does it help

There is no music because there was no music in the original datafiles for the PC version.

It loads all of it's data into a romdisk at startup, so it doesn't stream at all from the drive during play. Thus, a "dummy file" is completely unnecessary.

Ho to mount the disc?
I have this structure:

Code: Select all

CD
|_1ST_READ.BIN
|_IP.BIN
|_README.TXT
|_DATA
  |_BANK01
  |_BANK02
  |_BANK03
  |_BANK04
  |_BANK05
  |_BANK06
  |_BANK07
  |_BANK08
  |_BANK09
  |_BANK0A
  |_BANK0B
  |_BANK0C
  |_BANK0D
  |_CONFIG.DAT
  |_CONFIG.LNG
  |_MEMLIST.BIN
  |_MUSIC
  |_TABVOL.BIN
  |_VOL.1
  |_VOL.2
  |_VOL.END
It's right? Or the data files go straight on root?
Also, i think i can just add the Amiga MOD files so i can have BGM sound, but how?

the 1st_read.bin includes the data files it reads from a romdisk, and there is no code to read sound files.

Also it renders at 640X480.

This is pretty neat! I finally had a chance to try it today. Might want to make it clearer that you don't need the original data files to play -- I had initially put off trying it out 'cause I didn't want to go look for the DOS version.

ok i didnt know that it loads the entire thing at start up like a rom.. cool thanks for the info.. now i dont have to worry about playing it.. heh..

so i take it the original pc version didnt have the music but the music was added for the genesis, sega cd, and super nintendo versions?

its really cool how the guy who made the game in the first place let us have this game for free!! i cant stress the fact that its people like Eric Chahi and Jean-Francois Freitas who make things like this possible. if they would have just coded the game and made me go out and search for the original first off i probably would have never found it.. and with the authors of the game letting us have it for free.. really cool!

also.. maybe it might be possible to take the sound codes from the genesis, snes , or sega cd versions and implant them onto this version.. would that even work.. and if it did would we loose speed? anyhow this is a great game.. i bought it way back when used for like 35 bucks at some game store and even though the cart is worth like 2 bucks now im really glad i bought it.. its a really fun game and challenging... kind of like a puzzle action game.

I'm looking into getting permission to use the soundtrack by Jean-Francois Freitas in the game.

Eric Chahi is the person who gave permission for the release, as everything in the PC version was created by him. If I can get in contact with Mr. Freitas, I'll see what can be done about adding his soundtrack.

Aha... I always wanted this game, but came to the 16-bit scene too late.

Very, very nice!

I take it this was the new idea that was worked on for some time as an alternative to just improving raw? I must say congrats! :)

I quite like the whole romdisc idea also - how easy would it be for anyone to implement a virtual romdisc for other emus/games/apps as well?
